Castle was still chasing the guy, but Ryan had overtaken him. He was running on pure adrenaline now, wasn't feeling tired at all, just angry.

Ryan caught the suspect, driving him into the ground until he could get the cuffs out and on him. "Call for backup!" He called to Castle.

Castle pulled out his phone and called Gates, hoping she was still at work. She dispatched the nearest car, coming herself as well.
"Backup is coming!" Castle called to Ryan.
Ryan nodded, fighting with the man. "Stay down!"
"Get off me!"
"Not a prayer. Now stop struggling and hold still. I don't want to hurt you, but I know he will."
"Damn right I will. You almost killed my wife and daughter!"
"So hold still."
"NO!"
Ryan was more and more tempted to give the guy over to Castle, even with the handcuffs still on. The guy pushed and pushed, trying to get free. Ryan was about to give him over when the police finally arrived. Gates was out of her car in seconds. She pushed through the police and had Ryan and Castle in front of her a moment later.
"Sir." Ryan spoke as soon as he saw her.
"What the hell is going on here?"
"Detective Beckett was attacked outside her home. I pursued the suspect and apprehended him."
"What is Mr Castle doing?"
"I won't let him get away Captain. He hurt Kate and tried to hurt Alexis!"
Ryan gave him a look. "I needed backup. Esposito had to stay with Lanie."
"He is not a cop Detective Ryan."
"Would you rather have had me go after him myself?" Ryan asked innocently.
"Of course not. Fine, I'll let this one slide, but never again. Understand?"
"Absolutely, sir. Next time Esposito has to be with his girlfriend after she's nearly killed and Beckett's nearly killed, I'll go after the suspect myself."
"Next time, don't chase at all, call it in."
"So he can get away. I forgot. Diplomatic immunity, right?"
"No. That was a lie."
"No kidding. That dirtbag just happens to be the one who took Alexis to Paris in the first place. Then comes back and tries to kill Beckett and Alexis and Lanie just for being there. And I was supposed to sit back and call it in and let him go free again? This is why Beckett does some of the things she does. She gets tired of seeing people she cares about get hurt and justice go blind."
"I can't have you running around alone. If you can't get backup- and I mean police- don't get yourself into the danger."
"Are we excused?"
"You are. Mr Castle, I want a word."
"He needs to get back to Beckett," Ryan said protectively.
"It's okay Ryan. You go up, I'll be there in a minute."
Only then did Ryan nod and go back to the girls.
"Mr Castle, I understand you want to protect your family, but you don't have a gun and you don't have back up, you can't do this again."
"Ryan was trying to protect me. I just...I couldn't let him get away again."
"I know. I see where you're coming from, but it's too dangerous for you to do that. Beckett and your daughter don't want to lose you. They were devastated when you went missing for two months."
He nodded, knowing there was no sense in arguing.
"Please be careful. I like you, I wouldn't want to see you hurt."
"Can I go check on my girls now?"
"Of course."
Castle turned and hurried towards the apartment. Ryan was sitting with Kate and Alexis in the living room, a paramedic checking Kate over. Alexis ran to hug her dad.
Castle held Alexis as he watched the paramedic. "Is she okay?"
"I'm fine," Kate told him.
"Promise?"
Alexis cleared her throat. "I think so." Kate told him.
"What about you sweetie?" he asked his daughter.
"I'm not hurt," she told him, confused.
"But you're scared."
She nodded.
"I won't let him near you again."

Kate stood to let the nurse out and passed out.

Ryan caught Kate, lowered her onto the couch. He moved to let the medic back.

"She needs to go to the hospital," the medic told them, "but she may just need to rest."

"Can we try letting her rest here if we have a doctor here?" Ryan asked. "She hates the hospital."

"I'll call Espo right now." If there was no danger, Lanie could come over.
Martha barged in and saw Kate on the couch. "Katherine?" She looked at her family and knew something very bad was happening. She sat with Kate, holding her hand, treating her as the mother Joanna had been, that Martha herself hadn't been for Castle until she'd gotten older, as relieved as they all were when Kate finally opened her eyes.
"What happened?" Kate said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"That's what I'd like to know." She hugged her granddaughter then, kissing her hair, before turning her attention back to Kate since Castle seemed to have Alexis well in hand.

"Before that. Richard, what in God's name is going on?" It wasn't like Alexis to be so weepy or clingy or Kate to be fainting for no reason.
