Deeks had been working the past two days, like normal, not wanting to rock the boat with Hetty so soon, wanting to rack up points towards maybe taking a vacation when Kensi felt up to it. She had been sleeping except when he woke her up and got her to eat; she hadn't even mentioned going to see KC yet. He was surprised then to see her awake when he got home. "Hey, darlin'. Feel better?" His eyes showed the worry he'd felt the past few months.
"Yeah. I just realized something. I've been home for two days now. I haven't seen or called KC." Kensi looked angry at herself.
"You've needed to rest," he said, settling down beside her, his arms around her.
Kensi shook her head. "It doesn't matter. I should have at least told her I'm back."
"I called her the day you told me you were coming home." He thanked whatever strings Hetty had pulled to get them the secure lines. It hadn't been near enough contact with Kensi, but at least it had been something.
"What did she say?" asked Kensi curiously.
"She was glad. Said she'd try to come." It was obvious that KC was worried about running into Callen though. "Things are...complicated."
"What happened Deeks? Tell me."
"I don't honestly know, Kens. She won't talk about it and I'm not asking Callen."
"I will. Pass me the phone please."
"Not a good idea, partner," he said, meaning Callen.
"I need to call her Deeks."
"KC, ok." He would give her the phone for that one, but he knew better than to question Callen about anything to do with KC.
"Thank you." She took the phone and dialed her best friend's number.
KC answered the phone, sounding tired. "Yeah, Deeks."
"It's Kensi. I'm sorry I didn't call earlier."
"Hey, honey. Welcome home."
"Are you alright? Can I come over?"
"Sure, Kens. Any time."
"I'm coming. Should I bring Deeks?"
"If you want." She didn't sound like it was a bad idea, but she didn't say to do it either, leaving it up to Kensi.
"Okay. See you soon KC. Bye." Kensi hung up her phone and stood up, feeling refreshed. "Can you drop me off at KC's?"
"Of course." He would go anywhere with her, still not sure he really believed she was home.
"Thanks. Give me a second." She ran to her room and changed quickly. She was out in two minutes, the quickest time ever.
He couldn't help but smile, walking out with her. Kensi couldn't sit still in the car. She really wanted her friend. KC's garage was full: the motorcycle and Camaro combined with a mom friendly car that Deeks had helped her pick out, not that he knew anything about being a parent. Kensi stared at the newest car in the garage in wonder. She shook off the question that she wanted to ask and then bounded out of the car and up to the door. When she didn't get an answer, she pulled out her key and entered the house, stopping in the living room doorway in shock.
"Deeks!" she called.
Deeks had parked and followed Kensi in, thinking that KC might have a task that she needed him to do. He'd painted the nursery for her and moved furniture in, although she'd insisted on putting together the crib herself. He knew, the second he walked into the room, that something was wrong. It wasn't KC's "Marine housekeeping" and he put his hand out to keep Kensi from falling in something wet on the floor.
Kensi grabbed onto Deeks as she started to head to the kitchen, looking for KC. They heard a moan, a pain-filled cry, coming from the bedroom.
Kensi instantly let go of Deeks and ran up the stairs. She found KC in the bedroom and could see the injury. "KC? What happened?"
The drawer was open like she'd tried to get to the gun she kept by her bedside table. Kensi closed her eyes and then moved to her friend's side. Deeks called for an ambulance and then, taking a breath, called Sam, not wanting to tell Callen over the phone.
"KC, what happened?" Kensi asked again.
