"Why don't you go sit with him for a few minutes? I asked Lanie to check in on him, but I know he'd rather have you."

"No problem, honey," she managed a smile for Alexis and stood, going to check on Martha.

Martha wiped her eyes when the door opened. "Oh, Katherine, is there something you need?"

"No, Martha, I just came to ask you that." She sat down by the closest thing she'd had to a mother in years. Strange, but this was how she knew how Alexis felt. Just because they weren't your mother didn't mean someone couldn't be a mother to you. Martha had been from almost the moment they met.

"Rick will be okay. His ribs will heal with rest. He was very lucky."

"Why would someone want to kill my son? What did he ever do to warrant this?"

"I don't know, Martha." She had no clue what was going on and was just as helpless, hopeless, as Martha and Alexis in this case. "I promise you though that we'll figure it out and we'll keep him safe until we do. Nothing else will happen to him. I promise."

"You be careful too Katherine. I don't want to lose you either."
"I'm going to stay right here with all of you."
"Really?
Kate nodded. "Of course."
"Thank you."
There was no one she trusted to protect Castle more than she did herself.
"You're my family. Where else would I go?"
Martha smiled a little. "I am so glad you're here."
"I'm glad you're here too." She meant what she was saying. Somehow taking care of Alexis and Martha made dealing with what had happened to Castle easier. She knew she wasn't alone.
"Thank you."
"Are you hungry?"
"No."
"I don't even remember the last time we ate. Do you?"
"No. But, I can't stomach it right now."
"Why don't you rest? Alexis is with Rick and I'll wake you if anything happens."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course. You should rest while he is, while things are quiet."
"Thank you."
"Let me know if you need anything. Or if you change your mind about eating."
"I will."
Kate smiled for her, touching her hand gently before going out. Martha went to the couch and closed her eyes to rest.
Kate went to check in with the guys, ignoring her dad and Lanie's worried expressions.
Jim followed his daughter. "Katie?"
"Yeah, Dad?"
"You okay?"
"Perfect. Best day of my life. Isn't that what my wedding day's supposed to be?"
"I'm sorry sweetie."
"It's not your fault. I'm sorry. I need to call the guys, check in."
"Talk to me honey."
"About what? How I finally got Martha to talk but she won't eat? How Alexis has fallen back to her 'responsible' mode so she doesn't have to deal with the fact that she almost lost a parent." How Kate understood that. "Or how Rick wants to hurry up and do the wedding in the middle of the disaster that is our lives, in the midst of someone trying to kill him or me or both of us, I don't even know."
"Honey, it's going to work out somehow. I promise,"
"I'm sure you're right, Dad." She felt like she was trying to fight a forest fire with a medicine dropper.
"I'll help you through sweetheart, I will."
"We both will, girl. You know that." Lanie approached her. "Why don't you sit down for a minute? I'll call Javi and Ryan for you."
"Thank you Lanie." Kate hugged her dad and curled on the couch with her family.
Jim put his arm around her, tucking her under the blanket. "Is Rick asleep?"
She nodded. "I'm scared daddy."
"I know you are, Katie girl. And I know you have a lot on your plate right now." He wished that her partners had been able to stay and let others investigate. "Lanie and I want to help with that."
"How?"
"Let her check in with the boys, for starters. And I'll talk with Martha. We might not agree on a lot, but one thing we do agree on is you kids."
"Don't go yet."
"I'll stay right here with you, Katie, until you're ready. But I want you to try to rest. You can't take care of Rick, Alexis, and Martha, protect everyone, and fight the bad guys."
"Yes I can."
"You're worried about Alexis overdoing it."
"Yes."
"I can understand that. I'm worried about my daughter overdoing it too."
"I won't. I just need some sleep," she yawned.
"And when you wake up, all three of you are going to eat. No ifs, ands, or buts."
"Okay."
He held her, running his hand through her hair, rubbing her back, something he remembered Joanna doing when Kate was small.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Katie."
"I'm so happy that you're here."
"I'll always be here for you."
"Thank you," she whispered as her eyes closed and she fell asleep on him.
He looked up when Lanie returned. "Anything?"
"Not yet. They're worried about her too."
"They're good brothers." He paused. "What about Bracken? Is he still locked up?"
"I think so."
"I guess it wouldn't matter if he is or isn't. He has enough people..." That's what killed him: knowing his daughter would never be safe from his wife's killer.
"Nobody is going to hurt Kate," said Alexis from the bedroom doorway.
