KC had taken off early to change clothes; she'd picked up a pizza, chocolate, and the newest movie Kensi had requested to see. However, when she arrived, Kensi wouldn't open the door.
Kensi was sitting on the couch, crying. She had tried to talk to Deeks an hour ago and he had slammed the door in her face. She had completely forgotten that KC was coming over and didn't get up when she heard someone knocking on her door.
KC let herself into the apartment, putting the pizza down. "Kens? Hello? Are you here?"
Kensi jumped when she heard KC's voice. Sniffling and wiping her eyes, she walked out into her kitchen. "I'm here. Listen, KC, I don't know if I want to have any visitors tonight. I'm sorry." Kensi turned around and walked back to her den.
"You're kidding me, right?" She followed her friend back there. "Forget the fact that I just drove over an hour to get here tonight, much less got the dinner and the drinks and the movie, but if you think I'm walking out on you when you're crying, you're crazier than I am."
Kensi shook her head, attempting to stop her tears, but failing miserably. "Fine. Stay."
KC sat down near her friend. "Do you want to talk about it or ignore it?"
"Ignore it," whispered Kensi, though she knew KC wouldn't let her.
"So we sit here and pretend it's got nothing to do with the fact that Sam and Deeks were both tortured less than a week ago."
"It's not about Sam."
"Right, that's the other one," KC muttered.
"What?"
"Nothing." She wasn't about to let her friend distract her by talking about Callen. "So you're still scared for Deeks? Callen said last time he saw him, he had started healing."
"He did? I wouldn't know that since he won't talk to me!" Kensi jumped up, storming off to her bedroom.
KC groaned, getting out the blender and glasses, starting to make drinks, knowing they'd probably need them before the night was up.
Kensi sat on her bed for a few seconds and then walked back out to the kitchen. "Sorry, KC. I shouldn't have yelled at you. It's not your fault."
"Callen hasn't seen him either, honey. He was talking about the night you all went out for drinks, after you caught the bastard that hurt the boys."
"Oh. It's just...I thought Deeks was talking to everyone else. I tried to talk to him again tonight, I have been every night, but he slammed the door in my face. I don't understand. What did I do?"
"Maybe you didn't do anything, Kens. Maybe he's just hurting. He's always been..." She tried to think of a way to put it. "He's always been able to show the hurt more easily."
"Why won't he let me help him? It's not like he can't trust me."
"Everyone has things that they have to go through alone. You have, Sam has, God knows Callen has...maybe this is Deeks'."
"I want to help him. Or at least talk to him and tell him I'm here if he needs me."
"All you can do is what you've been doing, Kens. I know it's frustrating." She poured her friend a drink and put two pieces of pizza in front of her.
Kensi took the drink but refused the food. "I'm not hungry."
"Eat."
Kensi took the pizza, taking small bites. She was starving, but didn't want to admit it.
"He's never really been around this before, has he?"
"I'm sorry?"
"I mean, Callen's been through so much, so have you, and Sam's an ex Seal...Deeks is still very much a cop."
"He went through something worse than us when he was a kid."
She didn't question what it was. They all had their tragedies in their pasts, things they didn't ever speak of. For Kensi it was her dad, her ex fiancée, and her last partner's violent death. For her it was her mom's death. "I'm not saying he's not strong where it matters. And I'm not saying that you guys are heartless. But Deeks just seems...more emotional, softer for some reason. I'm just throwing things out there."
"He is different, but that makes him special, especially to me." Kensi hadn't meant to say that, but didn't try to lie either. Someone had to know and might as well be her best friend.
"I know he's special to you, honey." It was one of the reasons she'd made the effort to get to know Deeks, because he was so important to Kensi. "And you're special to him. That's why he'll call you. It just might take him a little while this time."
Kensi looked doubtful, but nodded slowly. She finished her food and drink, then got up and went to the couch, deciding that she was going to try again to talk to Deeks.
