KC turned to look at the pet shop window, thinking what Callen's response would be if they got Alina a puppy from Santa. She had been enjoying her shopping day with Kensi, especially since they'd been unable to do it the year before, but she still hadn't found an idea for Callen just like Kensi hadn't found anything for Deeks.
"KC, what do you think of this for Deeks?" Kensi asked, trying to ignore the sick feeling she kept getting.
She turned to where her friend was looking at a CD. "I don't know. I know he likes Kenny Loggins, but does he have that one yet?"
"I don't know. He has too many to count."
"What about a playmate for Monte?"
"He'd like that." She nodded.
They walked towards the pet shop together. "I was wondering Callen's reaction if Ali got a puppy from Santa."
"He loves puppies. Plays with Monty a lot. I don't think he'd mind." Kensi stopped walking a moment.
"Kens?" She turned back to look at her friend.
"I'm fine," she said, determined not to let anything ruin their day.
KC looked doubtful, like she didn't believe her.
"Really, I'm fi..... Oh, god, maybe not." She sat down, trying to breathe through the pain and sick feeling.
"C'mon, we can do this another day. You're coming with me."
"Where are we going?"
"To the doctor."
Kensi didn't argue. She just followed her friend to the car and let her take them wherever she wanted to.
She couldn't get an appointment right away so she drove Kensi to the hospital, scared to wait.
A doctor came out to get them almost immediately. "Kensi?"
KC nodded, speaking for her friend. "Kensi...Landry. She's thirty one, she's not allergic to anything. We were at the mall, shopping, and she got sick and just started hurting." Her voice trembled.
"How long have you been feeling like this?"
"I've been sick for two weeks, off and on, but I just started hurting today." Kensi managed to say.
"I want to do some tests. Is that okay?"
She nodded, but clutched KC's hand.
"I'll start with a blood test. We may not need to do anything else if we can figure it out from your results."
"Can I go with her?" KC said, not that it mattered one way or the other what the doctor said.
"Sure," he smiled. "As long as she's calm, I'm happy."
Kensi felt anything but calm. "Thank you," she softly said.
The doctor led them to another room, where a comfortable chair was set up next to a trolley with needles on it. Kensi sat in the chair while KC paced, both girls trying to pretend they weren't worried.
The doctor quickly did the test. "I'll be back in a few minutes with your results Kensi."
"Thank you, doctor," KC said, worried when her friend still seemed to be in pain.
Kensi looked over at her friend. "Do you think it will be bad?"
"I'm sure you'll be okay, honey."
"I hope so. I'm sorry we missed our day together."
"Don't worry about that. We'll go for Alina's birthday next week." Her little girl was born on New Year's, a little after midnight.
"Okay," Kensi said with a smile just as the doctor came back. He was smiling.
"I have some good news Kensi," he said.
"See?" KC said, smiling, relieved that her friend was okay, but still worried that she was hurting.
"What is it, doctor?" Kensi asked.
"You're pregnant. Congratulations."
Kensi felt dizzy. "I'm sorry, what?"
"You are about six weeks pregnant."
She thought back, remembering the undercover assignment. "Oh..."
"Why is she hurting? I've been pregnant before. She shouldn't be hurting." KC remembered the dizziness and the nausea, but not the pain.
"She is experiencing contractions. It's not a bad thing, there's no problem, she just needs to rest."
"She will." KC said firmly.
"I want her off her feet for a couple of days please."
KC nodded, but Kensi frowned at her. "It's the 23rd. Christmas is in two days."
"You can rest for today and tomorrow, then have some time with family for Christmas, but then, you need to really be in bed for a few more days."
"She will be." KC said, her best Marine voice. Her first question when they left the hospital was, "Are you going to call Deeks or am I?"
"I guess it should be me. What if he doesn't want a child yet?"
"You're kidding, right? You've seen him with Alina."
"She's not his, he can give her back when he gets sick of her."
"Yes, he can, but does he? Sometimes I think he and Callen are going to fight over her."
"You really think he's going to be happy?"
"He better be."
"Thank you."
"You know what this means, right?"
"What?"
"Not only do I FINALLY get to be an aunt, but my child and your child will be best friends, just like us." Alina would be almost two years older than the baby, like having a brother or sister.
"That would be so great. Do you think Ali will be jealous though? You and Callen are bound to be playing with this one a lot."
"You worry too much. She's more likely to think it's another baby doll."
"I hope not. Actually, she takes pretty good care of her dolls."
She helped Kensi inside and got her settled, then put the phone where she could reach. "I'll give you some privacy. You let me know if you need anything. Unless you've got to go to the bathroom, not one foot out of this bed."
"Yes mother." Kensi grinned and then picked up the phone, dialing Deeks' number.
"I know what you're calling for," he said, smiling as he answered the phone on his way out of the boatshed. "To tell me what my present is."
"Wrong guess. I have something really big to tell you."
"You've changed your mind about it being my turn to do the paperwork?" He teased.
"Deeks. This is serious."
Suddenly, he was frightened. He indicated for Callen to wait and focused on her. "Are you okay, darlin'?"
"I just got home from the doctor, and.... I'm pregnant Deeks."
He felt like he couldn't breathe.
"Deeks?"
All he could see was his own father growing up, the only father he'd ever known. "Kens, I'm at the boatshed. I can't hear you. I'll call you back, okay?"
"Deeks, wait!"
He felt like a heel, but she couldn't possibly understand.
***********************
Callen looked at Deeks worriedly. "What's going on?"
"Can I take you up on that beer?" He had to talk to someone and Sam would never understand.
"Of course. But don't you want to see Kens?"
"I do. I just...I can't right now."
"What did she tell you just now?"
"She's pregnant." He paused. "I'm sorry about anything I said or thought when KC..."
"Don't worry about that. You should be so excited." He smiled. "I think I'll stop by Kens' place and give her a present."
Deeks shook his head, trying to catch his breath, his chest hurting. He finally sat down in his car, the door open.
"What is it?"
"I can't be a father. I can't."
"Why?"
"I don't know how."
"Yes you do. You're excellent with Alina."
"Then I'm just a selfish jerk, Callen, okay?" He closed his eyes, leaning against the seat.
"Tell me what's really bothering you Deeks."
"I can't be a dad."
"Is it because of your father?" Callen asked softly.
Deeks' eyes opened wide, but he slowly nodded.
"Let me tell you something. You are nothing like him. Nothing. You are the kindest, most friendly person I have ever met. You treasure Kensi beyond anything else in your life. You never hurt her, ever, and you have never mistreated Ali either. If you don't want to believe me, fine, but believe in Ali, because babies are excellent judges of character."
"Maybe my dad wasn't always... He used to say we did it to him. And they say children of abusers are more likely to do it themselves. I would die if I hurt Kensi. The baby."
"You haven't hurt Kensi before have you? No. You won't because you know what it was like for you when your dad hurt you. And because of that knowledge, you won't do it to anyone else."
Something told him Callen knew what he was talking about. He hadn't had a father at all and, once he stopped running, he rivaled, if not surpassed, Sam for father of the year. "But I will hurt her if I'm not there for her. I'll break her heart if she has to go through this alone. After Jack left her, now me too?" He paused. "Will you go with me?"
"Of course. We need to stop first and get her some flowers or some chocolates though."
"I know what I want to get." They got roses for Kensi, her favorite color, and a teddy bear that was almost bigger than he was.
************************
"He still hasn't called back KC. What's going on?" asked Kensi, who had gotten worried when Deeks hadn't called her back.
"I don't know, sweetheart. Don't worry about it. He'll call back." She sat near her friend, rubbing her back as she did Alina's when her daughter would cry.
"Maybe I shouldn't have told him at work."
"Just rest, honey. It'll be okay." She finally saw the boys pull up out front. "I'm going to go get you something to drink. I'll be right back, okay?"
"Okay." After KC left, Kensi picked up the phone, dialed Deeks' number and waited to see if her would answer.
*************************************
Deeks ignored the phone, partly because he was right outside, partly because he saw a former ex-Marine coming towards him, fast, and angry wasn't the word for it.
"Crap. She's pissed," whispered Callen as they got out.
"Why do you think I brought you?" Deeks whispered back.
"KC, before you yell at him, know this. Deeks needed to process what she told him," he said weakly.
"Process. Is that what you would call it, G?"
"Don't yell at him. Please?"
"I won't. I will say this. If you hurt her, I'll kill you and hide the body."
"I know." Deeks grabbed the present. "Where can I find her?"
"KC, what do you think of this for Deeks?" Kensi asked, trying to ignore the sick feeling she kept getting.
She turned to where her friend was looking at a CD. "I don't know. I know he likes Kenny Loggins, but does he have that one yet?"
