Hetty looked at the badge on her desk, feeling sad that she had lost Deeks.

Kensi had fallen asleep in a chair next to the bed in KC's hospital roo. She didn't hear Deeks come in. Deeks kissed Kensi's dark hair, quiet so he didn't wake KC. A smile appeared on Kensi's face as she woke up.
"Deeks?"
"Hey, baby. Got your note." He pulled up a chair. "How is she?"
"Better now. She can go home in the morning. Where were you?"
"I had to go in to work, do some paperwork."
"Oh, are you going back?"
He looked at her. "When KC's better, we need to talk."
"What happened?"
"I doesn't matter right now."
Kensi didn't believe him, but left it alone. "Okay."
"Have you eaten since breakfast?"
"No. We came here pretty much straight after you left."
"Why didn't you go get something? I can watch her."
"Thank you." Kensi stood up to leave.
KC woke up while Kensi was out of the room. "Hey," she spoke softly.
"Hi. How are you?"
"Better. It just happened so fast." She paused. "They still haven't shown me the baby, whether it's a boy or girl."
"Want me to find out?"
"I promised Kens she could be here."
"Okay, she will be back soon."
"They asked if I wanted to call the father...I still don't think she gets it."
"Who?"
"Kensi. She doesn't understand and I don't know how to tell her. I still don't believe it myself."
"He's an idiot, KC."
"Who's an idiot?" An all-too-familiar voice came from the doorway. As they looked, they saw both Callen and Sam there.
Kensi came up behind them. "You are, Callen."
"Kensi?" Sam asked in disbelief. Now it all made sense, why Hetty had wanted them to come pick up Deeks. Something must have happened between Kensi and Granger overseas. There was no one else Deeks would protect to this extent.
"Why are you here?"
"We're taking Deeks to question him," Callen said.
"What for?"
"Granger was killed. Hetty seemed to think Deeks would know something about it," Sam said, trying to be gentle.
"That's crazy!" Kensi looked horrified.
"Is it really? Maybe you don't know your boyfriend after all," Callen said. He looked at Deeks. "Are you going to tell her or should I?"
"Tell me what? Deeks, what are they talking about?"
"Callen..." Sam warned his partner. Neither revelation Callen had, or thought he had, should come out like this.
"Notice I said boyfriend, not partner? He quit today. Left his badge on Hetty's desk and walked away. And, oh, by the way, he's a shitty boyfriend too since he was sleeping with your best friend while you were gone."
Kensi looked at Deeks in shock. She knew he hadn't slept with KC, but she was shocked that he had quit. "Deeks? You quit? Why? And Callen, unlike you, Deeks is a good person, wouldn't ditch me like you ditched KC with your child inside her!"
"You know why, Kens," he said softly. He looked at Callen. "And that's a damned lie and you know it." The blood pressure on KC's monitor was climbing higher and higher with no one noticing.
Kensi felt like crying. She ran from the room ust as a doctor came in to check on KC. Deeks was torn between tearing into Callen and running after Kensi. "I'll do it," Sam told him softly. "You need to stay here where one of us can see you, man."
"Why? I didn't do anything to Granger, although I probably should have. Just so you know, he shot Kens over there and I don't see anything being done about that."
"We have to go by protocol. Now do you want me to check on Kensi or do you want to go to headquarters?"
"Check on Kensi," sighed Deeks. He turned to KC and noticed the doctor for the first time. "Is she all right?"
"She will be fine, but arguments need to be taken outside."
Sam looked at his partner. "Shut your mouth and stay out of trouble." He left the room.
KC was near tears, trying to calm herself, but she was too upset. "Kens..."
"Do you need her, KC?" Deeks asked carefully.
She nodded, not wanting Kensi for herself so much as she wanted to see if her friend was okay.
"What's going on?" Callen asked, showing concern for the first time in awhile.
"None of your business!" Deeks turned his pissed tone to Callen before leaving the room, calling to Sam. "KC needs Kensi."
Sam nodded that he'd heard and ran faster in the direction the brunette had gone."
Kensi stopped at a waiting room, knowing that someone had followed her. "What, Sam? Here to tell me that you're going to take away Deeks?"
"Something's going on with KC."
"What?" Concern laced her voice now. "I need to be with her."
Sam nodded. "Callen and I have got to take Deeks in. I don't want to do this, Kens, but with it being Granger, if we don't do things by protocol, we may all get in too deep to help him."
"But he didn't do it. I knew it. KC was right. I shouldn't have told him what happened over there."
"Kensi...what did happen over there? Granger hurt you, didn't he?"
"No...He orchestrated it though. It was his fault that I got hurt."
Sam nodded. "I don't blame Deeks if he had shot him." He paused. "Stay here with KC. We'll try to get him back to you as soon as possible."
"You better, Sam. I need him." Kensi walked away. "KC? You okay?"
Deeks had ordered Callen out of the room, with threat of bodily injury, but the NCIS agent was still in the doorway, getting in the way of anyone who came or went.
Kensi pushed past to sit with her friend while giving Callen a death stare for taking her boyfriend away. "What do you need, KC?"
KC was still crying and nothing Deeks could think to do had helped much, if at all. He kissed Kensi's head again, whispering that he'd be back as soon as he could, and walked out with the boys, not wanting to give Callen the satisfaction of hauling him out or upsetting either woman more.
Kensi suddenly felt ripped in half again. She needed support but couldn't turn to anyone. She hugged her friend more for herself than anything.
KC held her friend close. "It's okay. It's going to be okay." She wasn't sure which one of them she was trying to comfort.
"I'm glad he's dead, but Deeks would never. Right?"
"Never," KC said, knowing it was a lie.
"I need him so much."
"Go, Kens."
"No. I have to be here for you." Kensi wiped away some tears.
"I'm okay," KC lied again. "Go."
"I can't. Even if I wanted to, they won't let me near him. Sam might, but Callen won't. He's pissed now that I told him off for hurting you."
"Go tell Hetty your side. Maybe it'll help him."
"Yeah, right. You really think it will?"
"Would you rather sit here and do nothing?"
"Yes...No...I don't know."
"If I weren't here, what would you do?"
"You're right. I'll be back later." Kensi got up after hugging and thanking KC.
*****
Hetty looked up with a smile. "Miss Blye?"
"Can we talk?" Kensi was nervous, but didn't know why. She had never been nervous before.
"Sure. Have a seat."
Kensi sat, trying to think of what to start with. "The guys told me Deeks quit."
"He did."
"Did he say why?"
"No. Just that he wanted to leave."
Kensi felt there was something more than that, something Hetty was hiding.

Hetty wanted to tell Kensi the truth, but since Deeks was the main suspect in Granger's murder, she knew she couldn't say anything, no matter how much Kensi was hurting.

Kensi wanted to believe Hetty so badly, but it just didn't feel like it at the moment.
"Anything else?"
It dawned on Kensi that Hetty hadn't asked how she was, said she was glad to see her, anything. "No, nothing." She walked out without being excused.
Hetty sighed. She had hurt the young woman more than she had already been hurt.
****
Deeks sat at the table he'd sat at so many times before, on the opposite side. He almost wished he'd had the privilege of killing Granger and was close to telling them so as Sam probed gently but Callen interogated.
Sam was trying to be kind to Deeks. He knew that he hadn't done anything wrong, but he had to do his job.
"Where were you this morning, Deeks?" asked Sam.
"With Kensi and KC."
"Where?" Callen demanded. "A place."
"My apartment. I bought breakfast. KC hasn't been eating. I have the receipt."
"Did you see Granger this morning?" Sam was taking over again.
"No. Wish I had."
"Where did you buy breakfast?"
"The bakery down the street." Deeks reached into his wallet. "I used my debit card." It was obvious that he had a picture of him and Kensi folded into his wallet.
"Can I see the picture?" Sam asked gently, getting sidetracked and not caring.
Deeks looked hesitant, but slid the picture over with the receipt for the breakfast.
Sam smiled as he looked at how happy the couple were in the photo. "This was before Kensi went away?"
"Yes." Deeks paused. "Did Hetty tell you why she suspects me?"
"Not to me, but maybe to Callen." Sam turned to his partner. "Did she say anything to you?"
"No, I don't understand why she suspects you actually. But I think we have enough to say that Deeks was nowhere near Granger when he was killed." Callen stared at the photo in Sam's hand. "Tell Kensi to mind her own business where KC and I are concerned. You can go."
"If you tell Kensi anything, you and I are gonna have a problem." Deeks said. "If you gave a damn about KC, you'd be at the hospital right now. You know she and I aren't sleeping together. You just don't want to give a damn about anyone except maybe Sam or Hetty. I feel sorry for you, Callen. I really do. You've got someone who loves you, who would never hurt you, and you've pushed her away, treated her like garbage. Now I'll go." Deeks stood.
Sam watched Deeks leave and then rounded on his partner. "He's right, you know. I don't like KC, but she is a sweet, innocent woman. She's having your child and she wants to raise it alone rather than bother you. If Kensi wants to fix things, let her try." Callen walked off without answering Sam.
Deeks stopped short when he saw Kensi. "You okay?" She looked close to crying, not that she ever did.
"I'm fine. Are you okay?"
"I will be." He held her close. "Thought you weren't coming."
"KC convinced me to speak to Hetty. She wouldn't say why she did this to you. We had a fight about Granger. I told her I knew, round about, what had happened. I told her that she sent you over into it. She's just as guilty as he is. I asked her, after you left, why she sent you, not Callen or Sam. She told me it had nothing to do with us. Nothing to do with me. She lied to me."
"It doesn't matter. Don't worry about me anymore, Deeks. I'm fine. But, something is going on here, something that involves all of us, whether its clear or not, and whether we know or not, we have to figure this out together. With Sam and Callen."
"If I see Callen right now, he might end up like Granger. How much did you hear in there?"
"Deeks! Enough to know that Callen is blaming you too. I heard that Callen wants me to stop helping my best friend."
"He really does think we were having an affair. He's that stupid. I don't know what the deal is about you not helping her."
"He's worried that I'm going to find something out, something he doesn't want me to know."
"About what though? Even KC doesn't know what happened. He just started fighting with her. Partly about Hetty, partly about me, and then when she found out she was pregnant, it was the end of the line as far as she was concerned."
"I don't know. But I will find out. She's my best friend."
"Be careful, baby. You don't need any more stress either." He kissed her black hair.
"I'm fine."
"So where now, partner?"
"I want to get back to KC." He nodded, walking out with her.
****
KC looked pale when they returned, but the monitors seemed right, as far as they could tell, and the doctor and nurses were gone.

"Not really. I'm not hungry anyway. I just want to stay with KC." Kensi took a seat next to her friend.
Deeks had known that and wanted to give them privacy, so he left the room. "Okay, what happened? Why do you want to kill Callen?" KC asked, sitting up a little.
"He wants to stop me from helping you. But I won't, no matter what. You are my best friend." Kensi closed her eyes, thinking about everything she had heard. "Something weird is going on, but I can't figure it out."
"I know you won't, honey." She made room for Kensi to sit beside her. "Talk it out."
"I want to make up for being away. I wasn't there for you and I should have been. Maybe if I was here, then this wouldn't have happened."
"What? I wouldn't be pregnant? Kens, believe me, you didn't have anything to do with that," she tried to deflect with a joke.
"You know what I mean. I like that you're pregnant. I have a goddaughter."
"Then what, Kens?"
"Maybe you would still be with him."
"I don't think that's an option anymore."
"Do you want him back?"
"It's not that simple. Things aren't always black and white, Kens. Sometimes there are no right answers."
"So tell me what YOU want, KC."
"I want you to be happy, Kens. And Deeks. Because you two deserve each other, in more ways than one," she teased.
Kensi smiled a little. "You deserve to be happy too. I'll do whatever it takes to make you happy."
"Some things you can't control." Her smile faded. "You can't make Callen want a family. And I want this baby so much, especially now."
"Let me talk to him and find out what he wants. I see the way he acts with Sam's kids. He loves them."
"They're not his."
"So? If I can talk to him, I can tell you what he wants and then you can decide if you want him or not."
"And if he doesn't want us? If he feels trapped by obligation? That's not what I want."
"Well, what can I do then? I want to help."
"You are, sweetie. Just leave it be, okay?" She said gently.
Kensi opened her mouth to say something, but thought better of it. "Fine." She was hurt though.
KC looked over, almost as in shock as when Sam and Callen were there a few hours before. "Hetty."
"Hello KC."
"Miss Blye, I need a word please."
"It's okay, Kens. I'm not going anywhere." KC told her friend reassuringly when Kensi looked uncertain about leaving her.
Kensi nodded and walked out into the hall with Hetty.
Once they reached an empty waiting room, Hetty turned to Kensi. "I have a few questions to ask you."
Kensi knew better than to argue, but it was obvious she didn't want to be there too long. "Okay..."
"You had an issue with Granger overseas?"
"You could call it that."
"Explain it to me."
"I got shot, Hetty. If that's an issue..."
"Please tell me what happened between the two of you."
"You told me to find the mole. I found the mole. The mole had me shot. I'm not helping you set up Deeks again. He didn't do this."
"This is not about Mr Deeks. This is aobut you. I am told that you suspect Granger had you shot. Why?"
"Does it matter? I didn't shoot him. I've been here with KC all morning except when I went to the station in time to see my two closest friends interrogate my partner."
"Yes, it matters. You could have slipped away long enough to kill him. Why do you suspect him?"
Kensi was getting mad and trying desperately to hide it, but from the moment she'd come home, she'd gotten only a few hours of sleep and even then she hadn't been at peace. "Because he set me up, Hetty."
"I doubt that very much, Miss Blye." Hetty stood up and left the waiting room.
"Well, who the hell cares what you think, Hetty?" Kensi said under her breath, walking out to see Deeks standing there, looking like he'd seen a ghost.
Kensi shook her head. "No." She took his hand and walked back to KC's room.
He stopped her before they entered, gently moving her to where KC couldn't hear. "I need to go help Sam."
"With what?"
"He can't find Callen."
"Do you want my help?"
He shook his head. "He's probably just sulking somewhere. Sam said they got in a fight and he stormed out. But he's not answering any of his numbers and he's not at the house or at headquarters."
"I'm coming. That was my fault."
"Kens, it wasn't your fault. It's been happening for months." He paused. "If something has happened to Callen, someone needs to stay with KC."
"Keep me updated?"
"Of course." He kissed her cheek.
With a smile, Kensi thanked him and went back to her friend.
Deeks made a mental note to find a hotel on the beach somewhere when this was over so they could surf, make love, catch up, and relax, none of which they'd been able to do in far too long.
****
Sam was feeling lost. He now understood how Deeks had felt when Kensi had been taken away from him without any warning. Deeks hurried into the prearranged meeting place. He had hidden his worry from Kensi fairly well, but he was beginning to think she was right. Someone was targeting the team.
"Thanks for helping me, Deeks," said Sam.
"No problem. You searched the bar near his place? And the one down the block?"
"Yes. He's not at them. Or anywhere else I can think of. What could have happened to him?"
"I went by the cemetary and Kens will call if he happens to go check on KC." He paused. "Kensi thinks we're being targeted."
"She might be right. I heard Hetty went to see Kensi before."
"Yeah. I don't know why but I don't think it was plans for the welcome home party."
"Did Kensi tell you anything?"
"Not about the meeting, no."
"I wonder what's going on with Hetty. First you, now Kens. Who will she go after next?"
"I don't think it's Hetty anymore," Deeks told him. "Did you see Granger's body when he was brought in?"
"No."
"Someone's pulling Hetty's strings. They have to be."
"You might be right about that. I saw some papers on Hetty's desk this morning with what looked like instructions for something."
Deeks closed his eyes, opened them, and just said it. "Granger had Kens shot."
"Yeah. That was on there too." Sam looked worried.
"That's why she had me pulled in this morning. And I have to admit it would have been very tempting. And it's gotta be why she went to talk to Kensi at the hospital. Maybe if we figure out who killed him, or even if he was killed, then we'll find Callen. Did he know about the instructions on Hetty's desk?"
"No, he walked away before I saw them."
"I wonder if he'd suspect. There are two people, used to be three people, he would do anything to protect."
"KC, Kens, and who else?"
Deeks shook his head. "You, Hetty, used to be KC."
"What about Kens? Or is he too angry with her?"
"From what I've seen, I would say she falls somewhere below you two but above KC."
"He's going to have a lot to explain."
"Why don't you go see if you can find out what we know about Granger? I'll see if I can get the instructions."
"All right. See you later." Deeks nodded as they seperated. Sam headed off to the morgue and found Rose waiting for someone. He gave her a smile and then continued in to the morgue as Deeks slipped upstairs towards Hetty's office.
Deeks made it out without getting caught just in time to meet Sam again.
Sam nodded at Deeks. "How did you go?"
Deeks held up the piece of paper he had snagged along with his badge.
Sam smiled. "Miss me already?"
"Hell no, but if someone's trying to hurt this team, I'll be damned if I'm going without a fight." Especially where Kensi was concerned. "Besides, I've gone months without her. I'm not getting in the doghouse her first day back."
"She was shocked, not angry. I think she understands why you quit."
Deeks handed the page of instructions over. Explicit instructions not only to seperate the team, but seperate the partners. First their professional lives would be attacked, then their personal ones. The plans were eerily thorough and would leave the team not only fractured but nonexistant. Michelle's name was on there, as was KC's for Callen, and Kensi and Deeks for each other.
Sam looked at the paper and frowned. "Who would want to do this?"
"Not Hetty. But who would want to kill Granger?"
"Take a pick. I'm on that list, as is Callen, and Kens, and you. Even Nell and Eric hate the guy. I'm sure that there are plenty of suspects for that list. But whoever gave this to Hetty must be the killer or know who the killer is."
Deeks picked up the phone and dialed, knowing Kensi probably forgot to shut her cell phone off. "C'mon, Kens. Pick up," he whispered before asking Sam. "Okay, better question. Who would have this kind of power over Hetty?"
"Hello?" asked Kensi.
"Hey, it's me." He paused. "Are you where you can talk?"
"I don't know. Maybe Vance or SECNAV," whispered Sam.
"KC's sleeping. What's wrong?" Kensi was worried.
He told her quickly what was going on. "I don't care if Callen's acting like he hates her or not. If he saw this list, he's on his way up there to you. I need you to tell me everything you thought was strange overseas. I think I might know where this is going."
"Strange? Deeks, everything was strange. The only odd thing I can think of was Granger trying to kill me."
"See if you can get a security guard to hang out around her room and meet us here, okay?"
"Uh, all right. Where are you?" He told her which of the safe houses they were using.
On the other line, he heard Sam telling Michelle to get the kids and stay at the house until they heard from him.
"All right, I'm coming now." Kensi hung up and went out to the nurse's desk. "Can you get security to stay outside my friend's room, please? Don't let anyone in without ID."
Deeks waited until Sam was through. "There's two ways we can play this. Either Hetty is a HORRIBLE person at her job or Hetty's playing both sides, trying to let them think she's cooperating while keeping us together. Which do you think is more likely?"
"Playing both sides."
"Look at this list, Sam. KC's problems have NOTHING to do with this. Kens is fine. Michelle is fine. All they've done so far is kill Granger, who is not on this list, if they're the same person who wrote this list."
"I hope you're right, but we questioned you and Kens and that's on the list. What's going on?"
"You questioned us, but we still have our jobs, which is supposed to be what the list is trying to relieve us of, right?"
"Right."
"You said the SECNAV or Vance have the power over Hetty, but why would they? What would be the point?"
"I can't see Vance doing it, but SECNAV gives me a bad feeling sometimes." Sam pulled his gun out as he spoke. "Who's there?"
Kensi called out and then stepped into view. "Didn't mean to scare you, Sam."
"It's okay. Come on. We were just thinking about who could be forcing Hetty into this." He handed the instructions to Kensi. She looked them over while the guys continued to talk.
"I think it's like a puzzle. You have a piece, Kensi and I have pieces, Callen's got one. Nothing makes sense unless we have all the pieces together. That's why they want to seperate us, because if we are together, then we know something, or can do something, but what?"
"I don't know. We need to find Callen though."
"That's another thing. If this is fulfilling something on this list, then why would they do so much better with it than they did interrogating us?"
"Guys, I think I know where to find him," said Kensi, looking at them. "This paper has a stain on it. If we can figure out where it came from, assuming the writer is one that took Callen, we'll find him."
"Why don't you let us take it?" Deeks asked Sam. "I think it's time you talked to Hetty. Maybe if you don't show that you know anything, you're just looking for your partner, maybe you can gauge her reaction."
"All right, but call if anything works out." Sam said goodbye and left.
Kensi turned to Deeks. "Where you find this?"
"I stole it."

"Hetty."
"You're kidding? You stole something from the all-knowing Henrietta Lange? That takes guts."
"We needed it." He paused. "Unless you think she let us do it."
"I doubt that. She wouldn't give it up that easy unless she needs help."
He looked at Kensi.
"What?"
"What if she does?"
"Need help? I don't know if I want to help her Deeks. I won't let anything happen to her, but I won't help willingly either."
"Why will you help Callen, but not Hetty?"
"I didn't say that I'll help Callen, thats only to help KC."
"Who did you mean? I don't think that he cares about me anymore."
"Sam and Hetty."
"Fair point. Well, like I said, I'll help but only for you and KC." Kensi thought for a moment. "And Sam too."
"Why Sam?"
"He's nice to me. He hasn't done anything to hurt me. You think differently?"
"Doesn't like KC."
"I know, but I think he might be starting to like her a little."
"It's hard not to." Deeks admitted with a smile.
"Really? That's nice of you."
"I'm a nice guy."
"That you are." Kensi moved forward for a hug and kiss.
He kissed her softly, holding her for a little while before they got to the lab.
Kensi took the paper from her pocket and gave it to a lab technician. "Can you analyse this?"
The lab tech nodded and got to work on it. Kensi sat down, feeling sore again, but not wishing to mention it.
"Are you okay? You look tired." Deeks said, worried about her.
"I'm fine," said Kensi with a forced smile.
"You're a bad liar."
"My leg is a bit sore, but I'll be fine, I promise."
"Why don't you find a place to stretch out? I'll find you when this is done."
"Thanks," Kensi was so happy.

Hetty looked up from her work. "Mr Hanna? What can I do for you?"
"Hey, Hetty. Have you seen G?"
"No, why?"
"I can't find him. I've tried calling him, going by the house, the cemetary, asked at the hospital..."
"He's missing? When did you see him last?"
"While we were talking to Deeks."
"How did you lose him? He was with you, wasn't he?"
"He walked out."
"Why?"
"If I knew that, I'd know where to look."
"Why did he walk out? You two are closer than anyone I know."
"We had a fight." Sam admitted.
"About?"
"Does it really matter?"
"Yes."
"KC, okay?"
"Okay."
