Excitement filled Kensi as she walked up to Deeks' apartment door. She had been gone for three months and the first thing that she had wanted to do was see the guy she loved. She hadn't been home yet and was still carrying her bag, having been dropped off by a cab. Kensi raised her hand and knocked on the door, knowing it was late, but hoping that Deeks was still awake.
Deeks roused himself from his near slumber in the chair and walked to the door, coming fully awake when he saw what, to him, was the most beautiful girl on the planet at his door. He flung it open and held her. "Kens..."
"I missed you so much, Deeks," said Kensi happily as she hugged him back.
"Missed you more," he whispered, knowing they should go inside, but not wanting to let her go even as short a time as it would take to walk indoors. "Are you home? For good?"
"Yes. They can't send me back now anyway. I got a little hurt over there." Kensi closed her eyes as a memory took over. She wanted to tell Deeks, but wasn't sure how he would react.
"How bad?" He checked her over although he knew he couldn't see anything. He kissed her forehead, holding her a little closer. It felt like the other half of him was finally put back together.
"Not too bad, but enough to put me on the sidelines for another week. I was trying to shoot someone but it was too dark and he shot me instead. Deeks, it was a setup, and I think that Granger might have had something to do with it," sobbed Kensi.
He protectively moved her inside to the living room where KC was asleep on the couch.
Kensi stared at her best friend for a few moments, trying to figure out why she was there. It was no secret that KC and Deeks didn't get along that well, after all. "What's going on, Deeks?"
"When's the last time you ate anything?" He asked, still in protective mode.
"Two days ago, I think."
"You'll eat." He got out leftovers, some soup, some pizza, no Chinese, nothing with a strong smell. "Or I can try again to cook something." She had witnessed some of his attempts at that though, which is why KC's soup had been bought, not made.
"Thank you. This will be fine, Deeks." Kensi sat at the table, suddenly feeling very tired. He fixed her a plate and sat down at the table with her. "I've missed so much, Deeks. What am I going to do?"
"You're gonna heal, Kens. And we'll figure things out from there. I'm here. Promise." He stroked some hair out of her face.
With a small smile, Kensi ate the soup Deeks had given her. All she wanted was to curl up with him, but she thought he was angry.
"KC's pretty out of it. Do you mind taking my bed?" He would sleep in a chair or on the floor if she wanted him too, but he really wanted to hold her.
"Only if you stay with me. I've been sleeping alone for too long."
"Never had a better offer," he smiled, teasing slightly, but he knew how true those words were.
"Thank you." Kensi stood up to wash her dishes.
"I'll get those, Kens. Go take a shower, okay? It'll help you relax a little." He knew she liked hot showers and baths at the end of bad days.
"Thank you, Deeks." Kensi dropped her dishes in the sink and then moved off, quietly walking past KC.
Deeks washed Kensi's bowl, turned off the tv, placed a blanket over KC, and went back to his room.
Kensi finished her shower and then walked into Deeks' bedroom, glad that he was there with her now.
He closed the door to give them privacy although he knew that if KC needed either of them in the night he would still hear her. He slept very lightly these days.
Kensi curled into Deeks' side, finally realizing what she had been missing for the last three months. "I love you, Deeks," she whispered without realizing it.
"I love you too, Kens. Just rest, okay? You're safe. You're home." He kissed into her hair.
Kensi woke up the next morning, feeling more rested than she had in a long time. She had spent the night in Deeks' arms, so she had also felt safe. "Morning, Deeks," she yawned.
He, on the other hand, hadn't slept at all. His eyes had never left her, partly protecting her, partly wanting to make sure it wasn't a dream. "Mornin, darlin'," he drawled in the way that always made her smile.
Kensi smiled, but a noise caught her attention. "What was that?"
"KC's probably trying to sneak out without waking me up."
"Why?"
"Honestly, I have no clue. I think she feels like she's intruding if she sleeps over too often."
"I have to see her." Kensi jumped out of bed and ran from the room. She screamed when she saw her friend.
Deeks had called it right. KC had been trying to sneak out without waking Deeks up, worried that he wasn't getting enough sleep. It never occurred to her that Kensi was home until she saw her friend. Once she did, however, she started to cry and couldn't stop.
Kensi ran over and engulfed KC in a bear hug. KC held her friend as if she would never let her go, although, finally, she did. While she did though, the baby gave her godmother a resounding kick.
"Owww! What was that?"
"Your goddaughter was saying hello." She had never been nervous to tell Kensi anything, but she could barely breathe as she told her friend that. "Kens...Please say something..."
"My...goddaughter?" whispered Kensi slowly. "What are you talking about?" Kensi looked down at KC's stomach and gasped. She was indeed pregnant. "Who is the father, KC?"
"Doesn't matter anymore."
"Why?"
"There's no dad, Kens. Okay?"
"Okay."
"I'm going to go down to the bakery and bring back breakfast for everyone." Deeks looked pointedly at KC, hoping that she would allow Kensi in now that she was home. "Any requests?"
"Some chocolate milk?" KC asked, not arguing with him about staying, although she knew she should probably leave them alone for a little while.
"You got it. Kens?"
"Nothing for me, Deeks." Kensi couldn't believe her best friend was pregnant.
"I'll get you some cronuts," he said, kissing her cheek before he left.
"Okay, I've known you since we could talk. I know you want to ask something, so ask it," KC said gently.
"When? And the father is Callen, right?"
"Four and a half months is my due date."
"You were pregnant before I left?"
"I actually was coming to tell you the night you left. I found Deeks instead. Hetty wouldn't tell him anything; he needed someone to talk to and I didn't want to go through this alone."
"I'm so sorry I wasn't here, KC." Kensi wiped away tears and attempted to talk again, but she found that she couldn't without crying.
"Honey, it wasn't your fault. I knew you would have been here if you could. So did he," she said, referring to Deeks. "He even told Hetty he'd go back to being a cop if she'd bring you home. He thought...He thought it was his fault, that she'd sent you away because of him."
"He didn't do anything wrong though. It was Hetty's fault. And Granger's. I think Granger tried to get me killed over there, KC."
"You didn't tell Deeks that, did you?"
"I told him cause I couldn't stop crying last night. Why?"
"Did Granger come back too?"
"Yes. He went home, I think. What's going on?"
"Maybe nothing." But it was obvious KC was worried.
"Please tell me."
"Deeks told me about the hostage thing, about the gun to your head and not being able to take the shot. What do you think would happen if he found out someone tried to hurt you?"
Kensi finally realized what her friend was saying and dropped to the couch. "Damn it! I'm such an idiot!"
"We don't know it's that, Kens." Still she felt waves of worry with the Braxton-Hicks contractions she'd felt several times over the past few months. "I'm just saying he's been very protective, that's all. And he always was of you." She remembered the story of Deeks getting up out of his hospital bed after being shot and shooting men that were trying to hurt Kensi. Kensi smiled a little.
