Sara was busy cleaning up after a case when her cell rang. It was still early morning, so she was surprised. "Hello?"
Linda Stokes Davis stood in the empty hospital hallway, tears in her eyes, stress on her face. Her dad had finally taken her mom to Nick's apartment to try to get some rest. She dialed the number she'd gotten from her brother's cell phone. "Sara? It's Linda, Nick's sister."
"Uh, hi. Sorry, but Nick isn't here if you're looking for him."
"No. No, I know that." She paused. "Mom, Dad, and I are in San Diego. I don't know what happened between you and Nick, but...I think you should be here."
Sara suddenly felt sick. "What happened?"
"He was shot." She choked back the lump in her throat. "They say he should be okay, he should make a full recovery, but he hasn't woken up. No one told you about this?"
"No. I've been working all night."
"It's been two days. He's been...he's been out for two days."
"Nobody said anything to me. I'm coming."
"Dad took Mom to Nicky's to try to get some rest, but, depending on what time you get here, I can have someone meet you."
"Thank you. I'll let you know when I land."
"See you then." She hung up.
Sara put her phone down. She felt tears run down her cheeks as she gathered her things and went looking for Russell.

Morgan and Greg turned around when Sara came into the room. "Are you okay?"
"I need to talk to Russell."
"Finn was feeling bad, so he took her home. Sara, are you okay?" Greg asked.
"Tell him I'll call and explain my absence when I can. I have to go." She turned, knowing she should have told them but unable to.
"Go, Greg. Just go," Morgan whispered, knowing something horrible had happened.
Sara had stopped in the carpark, crying. She was there when Greg came out.
"Where are we going?"
"I don't know. Home I guess, so I can pack. Then I need to get a ticket and get to Nicky."
"Get in," he said, getting in the driver's seat.
"What about Morgan?"
"She's calling Russell as we speak."
"Thank you." She sniffled. "Something happened to Nicky. His sister called me, it happened two days ago."
"While you pack, I'm going to call Catherine. Sam always kept a plane for his high-rollers. Maybe she can let us borrow it. It would be quicker than driving or trying to find a commercial flight."
"Thank you Greg." Sara continued to stare out the window, hopig that Nick was okay.
He went upstairs with Sara, making the necessary calls while she packed, one to Catherine to borrow the plane, one to Morgan to give her and Russell an update. Sara was quick. She had clothes at Nick's place since she visited him so often, just as he had left clothes at her place for his visits. All she wanted was to get to him as soon as she could.
"I don't know when we'll be home, babe. I'll call you when we get there. Call Jim or your dad if you need anything." It was his first time out of town since she'd announced her pregnancy. "Love you." He hung up.
"Ready?" He asked her.
"Yes. No. I don't know."
"Catherine's got the plane waiting on us." He took the bag for her.
"Okay."
He drove her to the casino and then flew with her to San Diego. Sara was silent the whole time.

"Ms. Sidle?" A young woman approached, looking barely more than Lindsay's age.
"Yes."
"Ms. Stokes asked me to pick you up."
"Thank you."
Greg got Sara's bag and followed the women out.
"What happened?"
She filled Sara in quickly and, the way she talked, it was obvious she was a CSI that worked with Nick, despite her age.
"Why didn't anyone call earlier?"
"It was an oversight on our part, ma'am. I do apologize. My second-in-command got read the riot act about it, but all we can say is we apologize."
Sara knew she wasn't in the wrong, but her pain and anger threatened to get the better of her. "Just take me to him."
Linda was sitting in a chair outside Nick's room when the group arrived. She stood immediately, remembering Sara didn't like hugs as the rest of her family did.
"How is he?" Sara tears threatened to fall again.
"He still hasn't woke up."
