Kate was smiling as they walked out of the movie, holding Ryan's hand. She'd gotten dressed up for the night, left her gun at home, and they'd gone out for dinner and movie. The only dark spot to the night was she couldn't tell anyone how happy she was, besides him. They were still discovering what exactly this was and didn't want to cause any waves with their family until then. Sneaking around for the last month was hard, but Ryan more than made up for it.
"That was lovely."
"It was fun. I haven't had a chance for fun in awhile." She was still discovering where she fit in her family and the rest of the time that wasn't spent with him was spent working.
"Join the club."
They walked towards the parking lot and she frowned, noticing for the first time that they had parked under a light that was busted. Her spidey senses were tingling as she tried to remember if it had been that way earlier.
"You okay?"
"Something doesn't feel right."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know. It's hard to explain." She walked a little closer to him.
Ryan wrapped his arm around her as he reached for his gun.
"Freeze." Even in the night lit by nothing but the moon, she could spot the glint of the gun, not his, but the boy in front of them, the one that didn't look much older than Kaya. "Keys, wallet, purse, and she's coming with me."
Ryan made a show of reaching for his wallet but grabbed his gun instead. "You freeze!"
The kid grabbed Kate, trying to put her over him as a shield. She put a stiletto in his foot and moved quickly out of the way, managing to get nothng more than a bruise before the shot rang. Ryan shot, hitting the kid's arm. As a cop, she'd been in worse situations than ths, but she was still trying not to tremble as she grabbed her phone and called it in. Ryan put pressure on the wound.
Ten minutes later, two police cars, an ambulance, and a Hummer pulled up, almost all at the same time. Kate looked sick, not sure why learning that the kid was only two years older than her sister upset her so much.
