Lanie, Castle, Alexis, and Martha were setting up in the kitchen, making sure the cake looked perfect, they had enough glasses, plates, and silverware. They had Kate's favorite takeout, enough for everyone, and both alcoholic (for those offduty) and nonalcoholic (for those on) drinks. Esposito and Ryan came in, carrying Sarah and some presents.
"You're supposed to be distracting Kate," Alexis fussed at them, smiling at Sarah.
"Give me that baby and carry these upstairs," Lanie bossed Esposito, taking the goddaughter they shared with Kate and Castle.
"Jenny is doing that," said Ryan.
"Please..." Alexis tried her best 'little sister' routine.
"Fine."
She smiled, helping Lanie load the guys down with everything but the food, which she and Martha would carry, and the cake, which her dad would carry. Lanie finally went to help them smuggle in the drinks, handing the baby over to Alexis.
Sarah babbled away at Alexis, 'telling' her about her day.
Alexis smiled, hugging the baby. "I can't wait..."
"Yes, you can," Martha said quickly.
"To have a baby sister."
"Relax, Alexis," smiled Castle.
"Really, Dad. I want one. Can't you talk Kate into it? It can be my Christmas present..."
"Alexis."
"This baby is smiling, happy, and well. Wait until one wakes you up at two o'clock before your final exam or has mono. Then we'll see who wants a baby sister," Martha told her. "Now help me carry these upstairs, darling, so we can surprise Katherine."
Castle grinned. He agreed with his daughter that he wanted another child, but he wasn't going to push Kate either.
Kate was trying to listen to Jenny, but was a little surprised she'd stopped by and was scanning the room for Ryan and Esposito. It all seemed like a set up to her; she could count the times Jenny had dropped by the station without Sarah, for something other than Ryan, on one hand.
"Kate, are you even listening anymore?"
"Yes, of course." She turned her attention back to Jenny. "I think Ryan will do fine on that sergeant's exam, Jenny. Both boys will." Kate rubbed the back of her neck. "I'm sorry. That's not what you were talking about anymore, was it?"
"No, but that's okay. Are you all right?"
"A little tired. When the boys get back, when I'm sure everyone's okay, I think I'm going to head out."
"Okay."
She saw the boys come back to their desks. "They're back." She walked out with Jenny, taking an inventory of her people, making sure they were all accounted for, before saying, "I think I'm heading home. If you need me, I've got my cell phone on."
"Wait, there's something else to do." Ryan looked up and handed a fake file to her.
She nodded, taking it back to her office. "Beckett," Esposito called after her. "You okay?"
"I'm fine." She smiled for him and went back to her office.
"Do you think she'll realize it's fake?" asked Ryan.
"You better hope she doesn't," Esposito said. "And Castle better hurry up." He looked at Jenny. "She seem okay to you?"
"She's exhausted and I think she just wants to go home."
"She came back too fast after she was shot."
"She always does."
"Yeah, but..." He shook his head, but was relieved when he saw Castle come in, Alexis and Martha behind them.
Lanie was carrying the baby now. "Somebody get that kid away from her," Esposito said under his breath, afraid she'd have the same inclination as Alexis.
"I heard that, smarty pants," said Lanie.
"Ryan," Kate said coming out, not paying attention to anything but the guys. "Really? A fake file is funny tonight?"
"You're supposed to be distracting Kate," Alexis fussed at them, smiling at Sarah.
