KC Landry glared at Sam Hanna across the table in the boatshed. She hadn't said one word to him since he'd found her in Callen's house, but at least she'd lowered the gun, a fact she now regretted since he'd taken it from her.
"Am I a suspect?" She finally asked, her arms crossed. "Or do you just haul in American citizens for the hell of it?"
"Where is he?"
"Who?"
"Who do you think?"
"The Easter bunny. Santa Clause." Sam glowered at her. "I want my gun back."
"No."
"Then what the hell am I doing still here?" She stood and walked towards the door.
"Sit down."
"Do you honestly think I'm afraid of you, Sam? If G wanted you to know where he was, he would have told you. Or is that what bothers you? That when he's in trouble, really in trouble, he comes to me first."
"Shut up!"
"You go..." The door opened and she saw her best friend come in. Wisely, she chose not to complete the sentence.
"Sam, get out," said Kensi angrily.
"C'mon, man. Granger and Hetty want a debriefing," Deeks told him, hoping this would work.
"Deeks, can you get my gun back?" KC asked in her sweetest tone. "I want to go shooting."
"Play nice. Both of you." He shut the door behind them.
"Are you all right?" Kensi asked as she waited for her friend to stand up.
"I'm pissed off, Kens. I don't have time for Sam right now. I need to go. You can get me out of here, right?"
"You aren't under arrest. Let's go. We can grab the gun on the way out. Do you know where Callen is?"
"Hon, I can't let you come with me. I can't."
"Why?"
"Callen doesn't want to involve the team. Not even Sam or Hetty. It's why I didn't tell you I was back home."
"Is he okay at least?"
"I think so. He's being haunted, but aren't we all, at one time or another?"
"Look after him, but be careful."
"I don't trust Deeks' bathing partner. I don't know if G is just pretending to or if he's just so desperate..." She shook her head.
"Neither do we."
She stood. "I guess it would be too much to ask you guys just to back off so I can try to talk him off the ledge."
"I can't guarantee anything, but I promise to try and help keep everyone at bay."
"He thinks Arkady can lead him to his dad. I've spent all my time in Russia trying to look for both of them. I don't...I don't think there's an easy fix to this. I'm just as worried as you guys are, but right now he trusts me. I don't...I don't want to do anything to break that trust. Then he'd be out there all alone..." She grew pale. "I've got to go. Kiss Sarah for me?"
"You can't see her for a moment? She really misses you."
"I know. I miss her. I'm going to try to stay home after we finish this, for both her and G, but...I don't really get a choice in the matter. Right now it's just too dangerous. I shouldn't even be here. That guy Sam killed the other night...he wasn't after G."
Kensi paled. "You?"
"I'm okay, Kens. And I would have been if Sam hadn't interfered. All he did was shine more light on his partner."
"Okay. Promise me you won't get yourself killed."
She whispered something in Russian, kissing the top of Kensi's head, and grabbing her gun on the way out.
****
KC made it back home before Callen did, having taken a moment to pull up the nanny cam on her phone, watching her little girl.
Callen smiled when he saw KC. "Hey. How are you?"
"Your asshole of a partner arrested me," she said, putting the phone back up.
"I saw. I'm sorry."
"I got to see Kens for a few minutes. She looked angry, not sure if it was at you, me, or Sam, but she looks well." It had been awhile since she'd gotten to come home and see her family, since May.
"Deeks is looking out for her."
"You okay?" She knew he hated keeping Sam out of the loop.
"Yeah, I will be."
She kissed him gently, stroking his cheek. She wasn't a fan of the beard, but knew it was necessary. "What's next, partner?"
"Not sure right now. I just need to think a moment."
She nodded, letting him go. "Think." She pulled out her phone again, pulling the app back up.
"How is Sarah?"
"She's gotten so big." She showered him the video feed.
"She's like her mommy."
She looked at him. He was one of the very few people who knew Sarah was adopted. "I asked Kens to keep everyone back, but that's not Sam. He's pissed now and I've not made things easier on that angle."
"Don't worry about it. They aren't going to listen anyway."
"Exactly my point. I think we get what we need, stash it somewhere, and leave, G, before they decide to take you in instead of just 'questioning' me."
"Where are we gonna go?"
"We're both gray men, not as much as we used to be, but there's places to go. Sam came home once. So has Hetty."
"They will try again, won't they?"
"Yeah, babe, they will. They'll think they're protecting you, maybe they are, but they're coming back."
"Then we should go."
"You go first. I'll hide the stuff we need and I'll join you. I promise."
"Be careful."
"Love you too." She kissed him, helping him pack up what they needed and put it in the back of his car, switching vehicles with him.
"I love you so much."
"Take care of yourself, G. Please."
"I will."
She smiled slightly. "This will be over and we'll be hanging out with our family and our baby girl again before you know it. Right?" Callen nodded and she watched him leave before leaving herself.

The last thing Hetty ever wanted to do was taser the man that had become like a son to her, the closest thing to a son she had, but she had to stop him before he went too far, before they couldn't help him. She closed her eyes and tasered him, watching the effect it was having on him. Callen shook violently, but still managed to get up and run again, finding a spot to stop and rest a moment.
Sam put his arms around his partner's throat. "Stop, man. Just stop. I don't want to hurt you."
"Let me go," choked Callen.
"That girl and Arkady are gonna get you killed, partner. Don't do this. Come in with us."
"No."
"I don't want to hurt you. I just don't want to see you killed."
"Let go!"
Sam finally let him go. "Listen to me, man. Granger's trying to stop them, but they're gunning for you. Stop listening to the dumb b...To the girl before she gets you killed. Come in with me. Hetty, Deeks, Kens, and I...we'll protect you."
"If you say anything about KC again, I'll murder you."
"She's gonna get you killed!"
Hetty came around with her taser again. The team watched as Callen ran off.
Kensi hurried over to where Sam was. "Leave her alone! If anything, she's the only one that can save him!"
"If she wasn't helping him, hiding him, then he would come in!"
"Hey, man, back off," Deeks said, moving to get between the two of them.
"I don't blame him for not wanting to come in. You don't know what it's like to be on the run from someone trying to kill you and not sure who you can trust!"
"I'm his partner!"
"And she's mine. So back the hell off until you cool off, Sam."
Kensi glared at Sam. "So what? You ask Deeks. I didn't trust him enough to let him help!"
"Yeah, well, maybe I've got a better relationship with..." He stopped, realizing where that was going. "Maybe I trust mine more than you do yours. Not that I blame you. I mean, Callen and I aren't the ones with our ass over the fire with LAPD right now."
"SHUT THE HELL UP! You leave Deeks alone before I'm the one that kills you!" Granger stepped closer, ready to hold Kensi back and protect her if needed.
Hetty was the one to drag Sam away. "Kens. Kens, it's okay. It's not important right now." Deeks tried to calm her down, getting between her and Sam. "We'll concentrate on getting Callen and KC out of this mess. Then we'll kill Sam. Deal?" He tried to smile for her.
"He had no right!"
"Babe, I'm okay. I'm not worried about him right now. He's upset about his partner and he's mouthing off. No big deal, okay?" He moved hair out of her face. "I want you to try to call KC. See if you can tell her what happened. She wasn't with him, so she might need to be on the lookout for him. Right?"
"Right." Kensi shook angrily, holding onto Deeks for support, even as Granger came back to them. "KC, okay, I'm calling her now."
Deeks shook his head at Granger, indicating he had her, holding her as she dialed the phone.
The only two people KC would have answered the phone for right then were Callen and Kensi. If Kensi was calling, something told her it wasn't good. "Kens?"
"Where are you? Is Callen with you?"
"No. No, he's not with me." She took a sigh of relief. If Kensi didn't know where he was, it meant she wasn't calling to say he was captured or dead.
"Hetty tasered him and Sam had him in a headlock. He ran off when Sam told him that he should stay away from you." Her voice still held the anger even though she was trying to stay calm.
"THEY DID WHAT?"
"I'm going to kill him for it and because he was mean to Deeks."
"No, hon, back up. You mean to tell me that Hetty tasered him and Sam put him in a headlock? Save me a piece or two of Sam to kill when this is over."
"Maybe if he's not dead already by Callen. He was pissed."
"We're supposed to meet. Maybe...maybe he's on the way. A headlock and a taser couldn't hurt him that badly."

"He seemed okay, but I swear he's pissed off."
"He already was and this isn't doing any better, especially because it was Hetty and Sam."
"I want to kill them both."
"Deeks can take care of himself, Kens. I know it's hard, but he's probably more worried about you than Sam right now."
"I don't care. Sam has to pay."
"Believe me, he will."
Kensi finally cracked a smile. "Good."
"Please be careful, Kens. I'll let you know when he gets here safe."
"Thank you."
"Gotta go," she said, hanging up the phone, reaching for her gun as the door opened.
Callen walked in, radiating anger, though he smiled when he saw KC.
"Hey, babe." She decided to wait and not tell him that Kensi had called.
"Hi."
"Everything okay?"
"No. Sam ambushed me."
"He did?" She saw the marks on Callen's neck. "He did."
"Hetty tasered me."
"They're worried about you, G."
"How do you know?"
She bit her bottom lip. "Kens and I talked after Sam arrested me...And she called to make sure you got here all right. I didn't tell her where you were. She's pissed at Sam."
"Why? I get that he was rude to you, but she was fine when I saw her with Deeks."
"Please. I've gotten used to that from him." Sam hated her and the feeling was mutual. "He said something to or about Deeks. I don't know what, but it was enough to make her as pissed at him as I am."
"He's attacking the team now?! Damn it! That's stupid."
"He's scared, G. What if you were in his place? If he was the one running, not telling you things? I'm not an advocate of Sam's in any fashion, you of all people know that, but I know that if Hetty's doing it too, maybe there's something there. She would never hurt you."
"Don't be so sure. She isn't the same woman I used to know."
"Would you be saying that if she wasn't trying to stop you?"
"Yes."
She had her doubts, but left it at that. "So what's next?"
"I don't know. I haven't found anything to help."
"What if we can't? We've each spent months tracking them down. I'm not saying we won't keep trying, but maybe we can't do it right now. Maybe, for right now, we're at another dead end?"
"It can't be. I need to find him."
"I know that, babe. If you have a lead we haven't thought of...what about that painting?"
"I don't know where it is."
"Do we have another lead?"
"No."
"Then let's find the painting."
"How? There is no trace of it."
"He said he stole the painting. Who did he steal it from?" She looked through the information she found on the painting and typed it into Callen's computer. "Here." She wrote down an address. "We'll start here."
"Great. Let's go now." She packed some tools to break in with as well as some guns. She was focused on Callen, not on whoever had been following her the other night.
Callen started the car and drove off, speeding through back streets to reach their destination as fast as possible. KC saw the familiar white SUV parked out front of the house, a few houses down. "Damn," she whispered under her breath.
"What?" Callen followed her line of sight. "Kensi. Tell me she didn't follow me."
"I don't know. I don't think so. I was worried. If she knew for sure you were all right, she would have told me."
"Then let's go. We can come back."
"G...I think it's time. It's time to let them help us."
"We can't. They don't want to help."
"You're wrong. And you can't keep running. Because the more you piss people off, the more likely it is that someone will want to kill you. This time it was just Sam in a headlock, Hetty's taser. Next?"
"We can't involve Sam."
"You're expecting me to argue with this?" She partially teased. "I'll back your play, no matter what it is, but, G, are you prepared for the consequences if you're wrong this time?"
"I have to be, I guess." Callen sighed, but he got out and made his way over.
"Kens, I didn't do anything wrong and, if I didn't, there's no sense in getting mad at Sam about what he said." Deeks told her.
"He had no right to bring it up."
"It slipped out. No, he shouldn't have said it, but he's worried about his partner. I remember how scared I was when you did this."
"He still had no right. He knew what he was saying."
"You've never said or done anything you regret?" He knew the answer to that.
"Not to my team and not at work."
"If he'd said something other than talking about that investigation, would you still be as mad?" They saw Callen getting out of the car.
"Yes."
"Okay." He knew how the investigation was stressing both of them out though, although he still couldn't think of anything he'd done.
Kensi opened the car window. "Callen? What are you doing here?"
"You weren't following us?"
"Uh, no. We are supposed to be working on another case?"
"What case?"
"A new one that came in this afternoon. A marine is missing."
"Is everyone working the new case?"
"No, just us."
"And you think that guy knows something?"
"What guy? This is the marine's home."
"Okay, well, let me know if you need anything." He walked back to the vehicle where KC was still waiting, watching.
"CALLEN! Wait!"
He froze, going back to Kensi. "What?"
"We could use your help."
"With?"
"The whole case. We need a new set of eyes. Please?"
He thought for a moment. "We'll see if we can't help each other."

"Definitely," smiled Kensi, glad to have her two friends back.
Callen motioned for KC to join them. Kensi was out of the car before KC reached them. She threw her arms around her friend. KC hugged her close.
"Thank you," KC whispered.
"For what?"
"Getting him to accept help."
"I asked for his help."
"Yeah, but he's still here. That's a start."
"True."
She walked with Kensi back to the boys. Deeks smiled briefly before continuing to discuss with Callen what they had.
"So, after this, are you coming home, Callen?" asked Kensi.
"No. Not yet," Callen said, looking at KC.
"Okay. You'll let us know when you're ready though?"
"We will," KC promised, holding Callen's hand in a united front.
"Why are you here anyway?"
KC nodded at him, squeezing his hand. "We're looking for a painting," Callen finally told her.
"Can we help find it?"
"We actually know where it is. I'm going to go get it."
"Not without me," KC told him.
"You should stay with Kens and Deeks."
"I probably should. But do you know the chances of that happening?" He smiled at that, knowing exactly the chances of that happening.
"We want to come too," pouted Kensi.
"You guys can be our backup," KC told her.
"What if Deeks came with me and you backed us up with Kens?" Callen suggested.
"Who's your partner in this?" Callen couldn't argue, but he had a bad feeling.
"Why don't we all go together? That way we protect each other?"
"And a crop of people going in won't be noticed," Callen said sarcastically.
"We can just say that we're investigating a missing marine."
"I think Callen's right, Kens. I think you girls need to stay out. I'll go in with him."
"No." KC had a bad feeling that if Callen went in without her, she'd never see him again.
"KC is right. We can't let the two of you go alone." All four ended up going in together.
Deeks' "friends" and his associates were waiting for them, guns blazing in an obvious setup. Kensi pulled KC back, away from the bullets, then returned fire. Deeks made his way towards Kensi, trying to provide cover fire for her to get out of the house alive. Callen continued firing, not sure where he was shooting anymore, but trying to save his friends.
A bullet went through Deeks' shoulder as he tried to protect Kensi. KC grabbed her own weapon, taking out the one who'd shot Deeks and trying to provide the cover fire.
"Go! Kens, get him out of here!" Kensi moved backwards, dragging Deeks with her.
Hetty and Sam were outside. Sam ran inside to help Callen while Hetty helped Kensi with Deeks.
"He was protecting me. I need to get back in there."
"I'm okay, Kens." He tried to smile for her. "I think it passed clean through." Still he held her hand, not wanting her back in there.
"I want you okay, but I also need to help Callen and KC."
The bullets finally stopped as the sirens wailed. Sam came out with blood on him.
"KC? Callen?"
"There's two inside that are still alive." Sam told the medics who carried stretchers inside.

"Sam! Where are Callen and KC?" demanded Kensi. "Tell me right now."
Deeks saw the gurney come out. "Kens."
"KC!" Kensi ran over, terrified.
"Go with her, babe," Deeks told her.
"But, Callen..."
"I'll take care of him."
"Thank you."
"I'll see you there, Kens. It'll be okay." Kensi kissed him and then left with KC.
Callen was inside the house, unhurt, but in shock. He wanted to be with KC, wanted to hold her, kiss her, take care of her, but he was rooted in place. His shirt looked like a bloodbath, obviously where Sam had gotten the blood on his clothing.
"Kensi and KC are at the hospital," said Deeks.
"Did you see her?"
"She's okay, I think. What happened?"
"I got her shot, Deeks. I could...I could have gotten her killed."
"No. Kens pulled her out of harm's way. She came back on her own."
"She wouldn't have been in this mess if it hadn't been for me. I was so busy trying to keep you guys safe that I didn't protect her. I failed her."
"Right. I don't think she would agree."
He finally saw Deeks' shoulder. "You need to get checked out."
"I'm all right. It's a through and through."
"You still need to get that taken care of. And I need a ride."
"You drive Kens' car, but be careful."
"You're going too."
"That's why you have to drive." He nodded, getting behind the wheel.
Deeks got out at the hospital, heading straight to the desk. "I'm looking for KC Landry."
"Do you know you're bleeding, sir?" The nurse asked, looking up at him.
"I'm okay. I'll get checked after I see KC."
The nurse looked unsure. "The lady that came in with her said two cops would be coming. Is that you?"
"Yes, that's us. Now can we see her, please?" Callen asked, losing patience.
Deeks turned. "It's all right."
The nurse checked Deeks' badge and let them in to where Kensi was waiting. Kensi was glad to see them. "She's with a doctor."
Deeks nodded, holding her, not caring about the pain to his shoulder.
"She's going to be okay."
"Thank God," Callen whispered, closing his eyes. "Was she awake? Did...did she say anything?"
"She asked for you."
Deeks looked back at Callen. "See? It's not your fault."
"You're blaming yourself?"
"I got her into this mess, Kens. If if weren't for me, she wouldn't be shot."
"It isn't your fault."
"Deeks." His friend turned. "Kens gets hurt."
Deeks nodded. "You blame yourself. Feel like you let your partner down."

"How is this not my fault?"
"Because she was out of he way. She chose to go back in."
"Deeks is getting shot at. What would you do? And remember how long I've known you."
"I never said I wouldn't do it. I would. But I'm trained for that combat."
"So is she."
"She was not working."
"So if you're off duty and someone shoots Deeks, you'd be okay with it?"
"Don't be silly. My point is that she didn't have to go back in, but she did. That is not your fault."
"Deeks." His friend turned. "Kens gets hurt."
"I don't care if you're in the same room or half the world away, you blame yourself. You let your partner down. They were hurt on your watch."
"Both of you stop."
"What?" Deeks asked. "It's the truth."
"So is this not being your fault." Callen knew they weren't going to win. "KC needs us, so stop arguing with me."
"All right, babe. For now."
"Not just now."
"I know how it feels, Kens, right or not."
"I want to see, KC, so if you're coming, you need to listen." Callen nodded.
Kensi walked into her friend's room. Callen followed, Deeks staying outside. "KC?"
Her eyes opened but she still looked pale. "Hey," she whispered.
"I found someone for you."
"G." Callen stepped up to the bed. "Kens, can you?"
"I'm right outside."
She nodded, waiting until they were alone. "Don't."
"What?"
"I know you better than you know yourself, G. This is not your fault. I couldn't see you get killed."
"I should have done something."
"Don't play that game, Callen. You'll go crazy."

"I can't help it."
"I know, babe. You're..." She stopped.
"I'm what?"
"I don't feel good..." She whispered.
Callen moved to the door. "We need a doctor!"
Deeks looked up as Callen called. "I'll get one. Go, babe." He kissed Kensi's head, hurrying for a doctor.
Kensi went back in. "What's wrong?"
"Kens?" KC asked.
"I'm here. What's wrong?"
"I don't feel good."
"Why?"
"My head."
"What about it?" She blinked, trying to focus. "KC?"
Deeks came back with the doctor. "Miss Landry, what's wrong?"
"She kept talking about her head, that her head hurts. And when Kens came in, it's like she didn't see her." Callen said, frightened.
When she couldn't hold his hand, Callen tried not to panic. The doctor started ordering an alphabet list of tests. Kensi started to shake, glad KC couldn't see it.
Deeks could though, bringing her to rest against him. "She'll be okay, baby. She'll be okay," he whispered, rubbing her back.
"What's wrong with her?"
"It could be as simple as low blood sugar."
"Or?" Callen asked.
"AS bad as a stroke."
"Stroke?" Kensi whispered fearfully. She moved to KC, grabbing her best friend's hand tightly. "No. NO! It's not. You're wrong!" she cried as she continued to cling to KC.
Callen wanted to comfort Kensi but he couldn't speak. Deeks came over, gently taking Kensi outside with him. "It's okay, babe. She's going to be okay. That was worst case scenario. Docs have to tell us that. You know that. It's probably just low blood sugar. She's too much like you. Gets single minded when she's working on something."
Kensi shook as she looked at him. "She's already hurt. Why does she need to be sick too?"
"She doesn't need to be, baby. It just happened. It just means she's going to need you more than ever, right?" He paused. "And Callen."
Before she even got back to the tests, KC was awake again, focused. "G?" She could see redness in his eyes.
"Hey, how are you feeling?"
"Tired. What happened?"

"You said you had a sore head."
"Kens. Is Kens okay?"
"Yeah. She's with Deeks. Why?"
"She was upset."
"She's just worried about you."
She closed her eyes. "I want Sarah."
"She's asleep."
She nodded. "K."
"You should sleep too."
"With you."
Callen smiled. "There's not enough room for both of us."
"I'll make room." She lay on her side. Callen joined her and she lay her head on his chest.
"Get some sleep."
She was almost asleep when they came to get her for the scans. They allowed Callen to go with her. "Deeks," KC said as they went into the hall.
"Yeah?" Deeks looked over. "What's wrong?"
"Shoulder." She saw the blood on his shirt.
"I'm okay."
"Check out." She paused. "Sarah. Kens."
"They're both in the waiting room, sleeping."
"Check out shoulder."
"I will." She went with Callen to the tests.
Callen found them in the waiting room. "She awake?"
"Yeah. She's been crying for her mother," said Kensi.
"Come here, baby girl." Callen held his daughter, rubbing her back.
"Mama mama."
"You'll see mama soon," he promised. To the others, he said, "There was a blood clot."
Kensi shook. "She's okay now?"
"She had a mini stroke. They want to keep her for a little while."
"No. No. She needs to go home."
"Babe," Deeks tried.
"I'll look after her."
"I've tried, Kens. Hetty's pulling strings, but..."
"I'm going to look after her!"
"Baby, if the doctors can do something that we can't, she needs to stay here."
"It's not fair."
"I know. She wants to be home with the baby and the two of you. She will be soon."
"How long is soon?"
He smiled. "Whenever the doctors say it's safe for her."
In the end, she only had to stay for a day. Deeks had Sarah and Wyatt at the house when they arrived. He had them playing outside in Wyatt's plastic pool.
