Kensi opened the door with a grin that lit up her entire face. "Deeks, come in."
"Hey, darlin'." His eyes didn't shine at her like normal and his smile didn't seem as easy. "We've gotta talk."
"Dinner first. I've been waiting a while. You're late." Kensi pulled him into the kitchen, where she had the table set for a romantic dinner.
"Kens." The room was beautiful. "Kens, it needs to be now. I'm sorry."
"No. I've waited too long for this Deeks. Whatever it is can wait."
"Granger is dead," Deeks finally told her, not knowing how else to get her attention.
"What!?"
"He was shot by a sniper in his home. I was just over there."
"That's why you were late?"
He nodded. "Yes."
"Why couldn't you tell me later? You kind of killed the romance now."
His phone buzzed and he looked at it, then turned it off, for the moment. "Granger wasn't the only target. You need to pack a bag and come with me."
"Why? Tell me what's going on Deeks."
"You're not safe here, Kens. You need to..." He ran a hand through his mop of blond hair. "You're the next target. You need to get out of here. You need to let me put you someplace where you'll be safe."
Kensi paled, a thought occurring to her. "Does this have anything to do with Afghanistan?"
Deeks nodded. "We think so." It was the only thing Granger and Kensi had in common that excluded everyone else.
Fear ripped through Kensi. "Deeks, something happened over there."
"You can tell me on the way, sweetheart. Pack a bag. Enough for a few days. Maybe a week."
"I want to go see KC."
"Callen's getting her. She's gonna meet us there." He tried to hide his worry, something he'd gotten good at over the past few months.
"I need to see her now." Kensi was trying to stay calm, but she was finding it difficult. "I want my best friend."
If Deeks didn't know how long the girls had been together, the stab in the heart he felt would have been even worse. He was good at hiding it though. After all, it was his idea that KC protect her because of how close the two women were. He knew no one but him would be as protective, even the boys. "Call her, sweetheart, but please go pack a bag."
Tears started to fall as Kensi packed. She had wanted a nice, quiet evening with her boyfriend, but everything was going wrong. It wasn't fair. Suddenly, Kensi started crying, having dropped the phone on her bed without dialling KC's number.
"Deeks?" she called.
"Yeah, Kens?" He came to check on her and found her crying. All he could think to do was hold her, run his fingers through her dark hair.
"Why? This was meant to be a good night. Why?"
"We'll have lots of other good nights, Fern. Promise." He kissed into her hair.
Kensi buried her face, crying her heart out. When she finally stopped, she grabbed her bag, but waited for Deeks to take her hand and lead her out to the car.
He walked close to her, protective of her.

In the car, Kensi dried her eyes. "Deeks, something happened over there. Granger and I saw it all. Could that be why this is happening?"
"Why don't you start by telling me what happened?" He asked softly.
"We were heading back to camp, and someone tripped me. Granger grabbed me to stop me from falling, and as he pulled me upright, I noticed that there was blood on my clothes. When we looked up, there was a man standing a few feet from us, holding a knife and a gun. Another guy was on the ground, dead. The murderer saw us Deeks. He chased us. Granger stayed outside when we got back to base, to protect me from anyone trying to kill us. I thought it was over when no-one came after us again, but it isn't, is it?"
"It will be, Kens. It will be." He looked over at her and offered a half smile.
Kensi didn't smile back. She was thinking about how protective Ganger had been overseas, and how much she had grown to like him. Deeks saw a car behind them but tried not to say anything until the car came behind them, hitting their back bumper. It was all he could do to hang on and try to find some place to lose them. Kensi screamed as she jerked forward, nearly hitting the dashboard.
"Deeks! What was that?"
"Hang on."
Kensi gripped the dashboard with both hands as Deeks sped through side streets. There were a few more hits to the car before Deeks finally got away. Kensi relaxed as Deeks continued to drive at a normal speed.
"What was that?"
"Three guesses, but none of them are good."
"Where are we going?"
"We're gonna make sure we lost them and we're going to the safe house."
"Where Deeks?"
He finally told her, but it was somewhere NCIS didn't have on books, didn't use.
"That's not ours Deeks." But Kensi didn't argue, feeling slightly better that it was truly a safe house that nobody could find.
"I know." But no one had known where Granger lived either.
"Will you stay?"
"At night. KC will be with you during the day."

"I'll have my cell phone with me all the time. You can call me whenever you want." He couldn't just stay there and wait when he could do something to prevent her being hurt.
"Okay Deeks," she said softly.

Callen, KC, and Alina were already there when Deeks and Kensi arrived. KC ran outside the moment they arrived.
"KC!" Kensi hugged her friend tightly, fear still coursing through her.
"Thank God you're okay," she whispered, hugging her friend.
Kensi didn't reply, didn't let go.
Callen came out, carrying Alina. He whistled softly when he saw the car. "What happened?" He asked Deeks.
"Had a few little accidents."
Kensi let go of KC to hold her goddaughter.

The tiny little girl smiled up at her godmother. There were no signs of the horrific birth she'd been through; in fact, she was the happiest baby any one had ever seen.
"She is so gorgeous KC. Can I keep her?" Kensi smiled.
"Not a chance." Callen said with a smile before KC could respond.
"You can babysit whenever you want." She and Callen were in the process of moving her and the baby to the suburbs of Los Angeles.
"Then I will babysit now." Kensi had originally hated the idea of being a babysitter, but seeing this baby made her change her mind.
"Am I gonna get to hold my goddaughter?" Deeks asked, silently helping Callen maneuver the girls towards the house.
"Uhhh, not in the near future....I want to hold her for a while." Kensi wasn't going to say that she felt safer while holding the tiny bundle in her arms.
"Maybe tonight, Deeks," KC said, accepting the hug from the man who had become like a big brother to her. "If it's any consolation, her other godfather hasn't gotten to hold her yet either." She looked pointedly at Callen. It said something that he was allowing Kensi to hold the baby; he usually didn't let anyone but him hold her when he was with his family.
Kensi smiled. "He likes me more than the others KC."
"I could have told you that a long time ago, honey." KC teased with a grin.
"Hey, I told you you were my favorite agent," Callen teased her, glad when they were finally inside.
A smile appeared on Kensi's face. She knew they were joking, but she didn't care. It made her feel a little better.
It was obvious that the house was in the moving in stage. "Hope it's not too cluttered..." KC started. It was hard moving in to a new place with a baby and with Callen back at work it was even more difficult.
"It's fine. I can help you with all this."
"Thanks, Kens." It would at least give them something to do.
As Kensi made herself at home, she felt scared. This wasn't fair, it wasn't right. Deeks made it obvious he didn't want to leave her, even if she was distracted by the baby. Kensi kissed Deeks, but stayed focused on the baby so he wouldn't see the fear in her eyes, or the tears running down her cheeks.
"Deeks...." KC started. "It's technically night time. It's your shift." Deeks was torn, looking at Callen to see what he thought.
Callen nodded, agreeing with KC, but pulling him aside anyway.
"Yeah," Deeks said, his eyes staying on the three girls.
"Kensi is scared, isn't she?" asked Callen in a whisper so only Deeks would hear him.
"Terrified." It was something he would have only admitted to Callen or KC.
"I promise Sam and I won't let anything happen to her Deeks. I promise."
"I know you won't. Neither will KC."
"Then what's bothering you?"
"You of all people have to ask that right now?" All the protection in the world hadn't kept KC safe the month before.
"Sorry."
"I am too." He knew how Callen had blamed himself for KC's injuries.

"You know what? Let's get this guy." Callen injected confidence into his voice, though he didn't feel that way.
Deeks nodded. "Give me a minute."
Callen watched his friend leave the room.
Deeks sat beside Kensi, noticing as KC got up and went to talk to Callen. "We're gonna leave now. I'll be back as soon as I can and if you need me, call me." He paused. "You know I'd never let anyone hurt you, right?"
"Of course. Do you have to go?"
He nodded. "KC will be here."
"I want you too. I know it's greedy and selfish, but I don't care."
"I want to be here." He offered a half-smile.
"Stay."
"I have to try to catch this guy, Kens. I have to do what I can to keep you safe."
"I know. Thank you."
He stood kissing her hair. "Night, Kensalina," he whispered.
"Night Marty." She cuddled him, making herself feel better.
He forced himself to leave with Callen. Kensi watched them leave through the window, tears slipping down her cheeks. She wanted to be with her boyfriend, like she had planned to be that night. She didn't want to be in isolation.
"He'll be all right, sweetheart. So will you." KC whispered from behind her.
"This was meant to be a quiet, good, romantic night...." Kensi said in response, through her tears.
"You'll have other nights. Soon."
"When? I missed three months with everyone, now someone is trying to kill me."
KC bit her lip, a silent reminder to take it easy on her friend. "I know, honey. I'm sorry."
"No, don't be. I shouldn't take it out on you."

KC sighed, wishing there was something she could do, something she could say, but she knew first hand that in situations like these, nothing could really help except closure.
