Morgan waited as the passengers got off the plane. It seemed odd not to be at work, but Russell and her dad had both insisted she take the week off. She understood that they'd done the same to Brass and had heard from Sara that Grissom had come in for the trial since he hadn't come for the funeral. The thought of Nancy pushed out of her mind as she saw her own mother. "Mom."
"Morgan, honey, I am so glad to see you." Lauren Brody hugged her daughter tightly.
"Thanks," she told her, accepting the hug and hugging her back.
"Of course, honey. I would have been here ages ago if you had called me."
Morgan took a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Greg wanted to be here. He'll meet us for breakfast tomorrow morning." They made their way towards the baggage claim.
"I can't wait to meet the man that stole your heart."
Morgan blushed quickly. "How's Michael?" She asked after her stepfather.
"He's good. Don't change the subject. What's this Greg like?"
She tried to think of the best way to describe everything she loved about Greg. "He's funny. He makes me laugh, even through all of this. And he's very sweet, but he'd never let anyone call him that. He's smart, of course; he used to be the DNA tech until he started working in the field. He loves vintage, old cars, old clothes, Frank Sinatra..."
"Sounds like a darling. He better treat you well."
"Dad approves of him. I never thought that would happen, since they've known each other since Greg first started at the lab."
"And Conrad actually likes him?" Lauren asked incredulously.
Morgan nodded. "Everyone does." She knew that wasn't what she meant.
"I never thought that your father would think someone was good enough for you."
They walked out to the car. "He's been here. Through Ellie, through everything." The plane crash, the failed spa weekend...
Lauren nodded. "And I wasn't. I know. You don't have to say it. You're disappointed."
"I didn't say that, Mom. And I didn't mean Dad. I meant Greg."
"You didn't have to say it. And it still applies. I should have been here for you."
"I knew when I moved to Vegas there would be times you couldn't be here. But you were here for so many years when Dad wasn't."
"True. But you aren't even a little mad?"
"I stopped being mad when I saw what it did to Jim's family. It's just not worth it." Lauren grabbed her bags and followed her daughter to a car.
Morgan drove home. She'd spent the day cleaning, but still worried there would be something she missed.
When she walked inside, Lauren gasped. The apartment was spotless and gorgeous. It was clear that her daughter had gone to a lot of trouble to clean up and had done a fantastic job of decorating.
"You can take my room. I'm going to sleep in here," she indicated the living room.
"Don't be silly, honey."
"It's okay, Mom. It's more comfortable in there." She showed her to her room.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure." She hadn't been sleeping well lately anyway."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome. Are you hungry?"
"No, I ate on the plane."
"I'll let you get settled."
"Do you need to do something?"
She shook her head. "Russell gave me the week off."
She wasn't sure she knew how to have a night off anymore, especially without Greg.
"That was nice of him."
"Everyone has really been great through this." Part of her would rather be working instead of thinking.
"Okay. Why don't we go visit your friends?" Lauren had sensed that something wasn't right.
"We could do that, but we don't have to." She had a feeling that Grissom might do the same that night and wasn't completely sure she wanted to be around to see if Nick lived up to his temporary truce or not.
"Come on. I want to meet your friends. Especially this Greg."
Morgan nodded, waiting until her mom was ready and then leaving, driving to the lab.
Greg greeted them at the lab. "Hey, Morgan. Who is this?"
"This is my mom, Lauren Brody. Mom, this is Greg Sanders."
"Nice to meet you, Ms. Brody."
Lauren greeted Greg warmly and tried to hide a smile as she saw Morgan slip her hand into Greg's.
"Ms. Brody, I need to borrow Morgan for a minute. This is Nick. He will show you around." Nick put on his best Texas manners and charm, showing Lauren around.
"So, Nick, who are my daughter's friends?"
"The entire night shift is like a family," he told her. "There's D.B. Russell, he's our supervisor, Julie Finlay, Sara Sidle, David Hodges, me, and, of course, you've already met Greg."
"Greg is Morgan's boyfriend. Can I meet Sara, DB, Julie, and David?"
Nick knocked on the open door to Russell's office where he and Finn were talking, knowing they were not busy on a case, and introduced Lauren.
"Hi. Come in," said Russell with a smile.
They walked into the office and Finn stood, giving Lauren the chair.
"No, thank you. I can stand."
Nick heard a different sound to the hallway, almost like a hush, and turned to see Grissom walking the hall. He had hoped that their former coworker would skip the visit to the lab he hadn't seen in six years, but that wasn't the case.
"Nick, why don't we go introduce Lauren to Sara?" asked Finn, noticing the look of pure hatred on his face.
"I don't know if I need to be in there right now." But he knew he wanted to be close, just in case.
"Come on. He's going to see Jim. He was already with Sara when I came in here."
Lauren looked confused and Nick nodded. "Yeah. Let's go see Sara."
Finn led the way, keeping an eye on Nick. When they reached Sara's lab, she relaxed again. "Hey, Sara, are we interrupting?"
"No. Who is this?" Sara asked.
"This is Morgan's mom, Lauren. Mrs. Brody, this is Sara," Nick answered.
"Hi, Lauren. How are you?"
"Nice to meet you," Lauren said politely. She remembered hearing about Sara and Finn in relation to the spa weekend.
"Would you like to get a coffee or something?"
"I'd like that."
Sara smiled and led Lauren out to the break room. "Nicky, you coming?" She had noticed her boyfriend was angry.
"Yeah." He smiled for her, trying to let her know he wasn't angry at her, but rather at her ex.
A grin spread on Sara's face. "Let's go then."
Finn went to find Hodges, knowing he'd want to meet Morgan's mom as well.
Hodges looked up smugly. "Oh, hey, Finn. What's up?"
"Morgan's mom's here if you want to meet her. I think she's wanting to meet all of us."
"Okay. Where is she?"
"Break room with Sara and Nick."
"Where's Morgan?"
"I don't know. She must be around here somewhere, but I haven't seen her."
"Okay. Maybe she's with Greg." Hodges walked out of the lab and off to the break room.
Knowing no one could see, Morgan wrapped her arms around Greg, her head against his chest. "I wish you had the week off too."
"So do I. But I'll be out of here soon and we can do something together. Maybe go out for breakfast?"
"Yeah, I told Mom you would meet us tomorrow for breakfast."
"I meant just the two of us, but it's your choice." He kissed her softly. "Have you seen Jim?"
"No. Why?"
"I just wondered how he was doing."
"Want to call him?"
"No. If he's not thinking about it, I don't want to bring it up."
"Okay."
"We should go back inside before Mom gets overwhelmed."
"Morgan, honey, I am so glad to see you." Lauren Brody hugged her daughter tightly.
"Thanks," she told her, accepting the hug and hugging her back.
"Of course, honey. I would have been here ages ago if you had called me."
