Gates slipped out, not wanting to intrude, and Ryan left soon after, although he didn't go far, wanting to be there in case Beckett or Castle needed anything.
Kate buried her head against his chest, her eyes closing, not passing out, just resting.

Jim walked in with Alexis and Martha soon after, and he went straight to his daughter to hug her.

"Hey, Dad," she whispered softly. Alexis noticed that she looked pale and the oxygen tube scared her, but she hugged Kate all the same, gently, as if she were afraid she'd break her. "Hi, honey."

Jim started to kiss her forehead and tell her to get some rest, but something stopped him. "Katie?" His voice sounded worried, even more so the second time when she didn't answer him. "Katie?"

She and her mom had never really been close. Her mom was fun to breeze in and breeze out, but when a crisis had passed in the last six years, it had been Kate she'd gone to, sometimes over her dad. She didn't want to leave her, but if she didn't and Lanie or the boys could help, she'd never forgive herself. She hurried out, searching for Lanie. She'd tried hard to block out Kate's shooting, just as she had her own kidnapping, but she remembered Lanie working on Kate, keeping her alive. Maybe she could help this time too.
