Nick walked through the house, feeling sick to his stomach at all the blood. They had accounted for every member of the family except for the little girl. Nick hadn't prayed in years, since Sara had come home from the desert, but he was praying silently that he wouldn't find a child's body in the next place he thought to look. Sara was behind Nick and knew that he was hurting. She was scared too; it was never good when a child was hurt, no matter how bad. When they found the little girl, Russell tried to talk to her, but she wouldn't respond to him much less let him near her. Morgan could talk to her or Sara, but only Nick could get close to her and when he did, she put her arms around his neck and clung to him as if bad guys were right around the corner.
"It's okay, sweetheart," Nick said.
"Is he still here?"
"No, sweetheart. You're safe. My name's Nick. I work with the cops. These are my friends. We're all going to make sure no one hurts you ever again."
"I'm scared."
"I know you are, sweetheart. Do you want me to come with you?"
The little girl nodded.
"Okay. Let's go see who we can find to help you." He walked outside, letting her stay clinging to him, not that he thought anyone could remove her.
"Do you know my name?"
"Katie. Right?"
"Yep, and my mummy's name is Emma. My daddy is Tom."
"Sweetie, we're going to go through the living room and into the sun. I want you to close your eyes, just until you feel the sun. You know how it's always so warm? Close your eyes until you feel the warm."
Katie did what Nick told her and rested her head against him. She wasn't sure why, but she knew he was a good person, and that she could trust him. Nick carried her out of the house but couldn't stop thinking about the victims as more than just more victims on another case, but instead as Emma and Tom.
"Nick, can you find my parents?"
"Sweetheart..." Nick paused for a long time. "We'll talk about it later, okay?"
"Okay."
He sat with her in the ambulance, letting go of her just long enough for her to be checked out and him to text Sara to meet them at the hospital when she could.
"Do I have to stay in the hospital?"
"We don't know, sweetheart. We have to see what the doctor says."
"Will you stay with me?"
"As long as you want."
"Thank you."
"No problem. A nice lady named Sara, you met her inside, she might come to visit later."
"She's pretty."
"She is. She's very nice too."
"Will she find mummy?"
"We'll talk about that when we get to the hospital, okay?"
Katie nodded.
