KC nodded, shifting slightly with a wince.

Yeah, Callen, she thought to herself. "No, I'm okay."

"Do you need anything else?"
"No. Thanks." She tried to smile for her friend.
"What can I do for you then? I feel really helpless right now."
"Help me get dressed?"
Kensi nodded. "Okay." *********** "What do you want G?" asked Sam.
"I want you to calm down. With KC and with Kens."
"Kens? What about her?"
"You yelled at her? Fought with her while her best friend's hurt."
"I didn't..."
"Not what I heard."
"Maybe I yelled at her, but she doesn't like to listen. I think she's taking advantage of the fact that everyone is in tune with her smallest need so that they can stop her from doing something that would bring back memories..."
"You stop right there. After all the things everyone's had to step around with you, don't you dare go there with her."
"With me? You're nuts."
"Yeah, that's why if anyone ever even thinks that anyone remotely connected with the military is guilty of a parking ticket you jump down our throats?"
"Military, CIA, any undercover assignment you've EVER had, am I getting through to you, partner?"
"I do not. And this has nothing to do with me. It's completely different to her. She acts like it was the end of the world over there."
"It was. The end of her world. The end of theirs maybe. And yes you most certainly do. Do you have any clue how many fights we've had over military over the years?"
"We don't fight, we just don't agree. Kensi is just being selfish. She wants everyone to agree with her, and that woman you seem to like for some unknown reason."
"Get the hell away from me, Sam. Run." Every pore of him was angry.
"You're an idiot if you agree with her. She's a liar." Sam walked away.
Callen hurried after his partner and pushed him, hard.
Sam fell into the wall and groaned. "What the hell?!"
"You want to call either of them a liar? At least they weren't in the CIA without telling me," he whispered where only Sam could hear.
"That was a long time ago."
"It still happened. Maybe when you want to start calling women liars, you'll start with your own wife. Or what about Hetty?"
"You leave Michelle and Hetty out of this!"
"Then you leave Kens and KC alone. You want to throw rocks, Sam, I've got plenty I've been saving up."
"Right."
He let Sam go, not knowing if he'd be shrugged off or punched.
Deeks came running up. "Callen, are you okay?"
"We're fine here." He directed the next to his partner. "Right?"
"Yeah."
He helped Sam up, silently daring him to repeat what he'd said about either girl, especially Kensi.
"I'll see you later." Sam knew if Deeks found out what he'd said about Kensi, he'd be dead.
Callen nodded, watching his partner walk away, hoping when the dust died down, they'd be okay.
"Are the girls okay?"
"Yeah. We need to leave now. What just happened?"
"Sam fell. I was helping him back up."
"You sure you're alright?"
Callen thought of what Sam had said, but knew it would kill Deeks to know what Sam had said about Kensi and infuriate him even more than he already was to hear what Sam had said about KC, although it was no big surprise to him. She and Sam had never gotten along, which was why Alina had two sets of godparents: Kensi and Deeks for KC and Sam and Michelle for him with Hetty as honorary grandmother.
"Come on, KC and Kens are waiting for us so we can leave. Kensi wants to get everyone back to her place so she can keep you guys safe." Deeks started to turn. "Oh, you might want to stop looking so miserable, or the girls are gonna ask questions until you tell them."

Callen tried his best, but he found little, if anything, about the situation not to be miserable about, that was, until he saw KC and his daughter again.

"I don't mind, if you think you can handle it," she said, allowing Deeks to pick up Alina and the bag after helping her into her chair.

"I can do it. Come on." Kensi was glad to take her friend home.
Callen wished that he could do something to help, but with his chest and arm hurt, he didn't want to try holding Alina and have something happen to her and he couldn't hold the bag or push the wheelchair. Instead he stood guard, watching for Sam or anyone else who would hurt his family. Kensi wheeled the chair to her car and helped KC stand. She got her friend in the car and closed the door, then moved to the other side and opened it for Deeks to put Alina in, and so Callen could also get in. Deeks let Callen get in first and handed Alina to Kensi just long enough to get in the car before he took her back, putting her between him and Callen.
Kensi got in and then drove home, her friends and boyfriend safe with her. "You guys can have my room if you want. I'll share the spare with Deeks."
Kensi got in and then drove home, her friends and boyfriend safe with her. "You guys can have my room if you want. I'll share the spare with Deeks."
"You can have the room," KC told Callen. "I'll sleep on the couch. Her playpen's in there anyway."
"No. You got more hurt then I did. And we can share. We're both adults."
She started to say he could have fooled her, but she didn't want to fight anymore. "We'll see."
"You have my bed KC, and I'll take the couch," Kensi told them.
"No, honey. You and Deeks have your room. We'll get along. Promise." She smiled for her friend.
"If you change your mind, tell me."
"I will." She took Alina back from Deeks.
"Okay."
"Thanks though."
"Of course."
Deeks indicated to Kensi that they should probably let them rest for a little while.
"Yeah, I'll get breakfast ready."
"I'll help." They left the family alone.
"Do you think they'll be okay?"
"I think they just need some time. I mean, yesterday they were fighting like cats and dogs. You can't just expect them to jump right in with each other again."
"But, they have to get back together."
"I know, hon, but don't push. It's just more stress right now that they don't need."
"Okay."
"After things die down, I'll help, okay? Just...with the wreck, with Sam being such a huge ass..."
"Thank you for sticking up for us."
Deeks had a feeling that he had only just begun to fight Sam for both girls, but he didn't say so. He kissed her head. "Hey, you're my girl. And KC's like having a sister. I always wanted a sister."
"Really? That girl would have been so unlucky," grinned Kensi.
"Mean. Mean woman." He grinned at her though.
"I love you." She kissed him.
"I love you, darlin'. And I wish for KC to be as happy as we are, but they have to heal first."
"Should I help them?"
"You are. I don't know what was going to happen when Joelle appeared at that hospital, but it wasn't going to end well."
"She was there?"
"She was coming."
"I want to kill her. Sam too."
"I don't want you anywhere near Sam without me or Callen. Joelle, feel free."
"Sam won't hurt me. But if I find that cow, I will make her pay for hurting my best friend."
"He already hurt you once, Kens. And she's a bitch, not a cow." In other time, without Kensi, before he knew of her personality, he would have liked Joelle himself.
"I was trying to be nice. But, yes, you're right,"
"That's what I love about you. You're so nice." He said, partly teasing.
Kensi wrapped her arms around him. "I love you so much."
"I love you too, darlin'." He thought about Callen and couldn't even begin to imagine what his friend was going through.
"Maybe we should finish breakfast before I melt in your arms."
"Do you really think they care about breakfast right now?" He whispered.
"They have to eat."
"Later..."
"Okay....."
"Can I just hold you?"
"Go right ahead."
He held her in his arms, letting himself surround her.
"You are my favourite person ever."
"You're mine too," he whispered.
"Good." ************ KC woke with a start, checking on Alina, making sure the baby girl was still asleep.
Callen turned his head and opened his eyes. "KC? Are you okay?"
"Yeah. I just thought she needed me."
"Is she okay?"
"Still asleep."
"Then come back to bed. Get some rest."
She maneuvered with the wheelchair back to bed, laying down beside him.
"You sure you're okay?"
"Why wouldn't I be?"
"You seem different."
"Different how?"
"Maybe scared?"
She was torn between being how she always was, denying it, keeping up walls, and admitting it. "I'm not scared for Ali, because I know without a doubt that Kens and Deeks would take care of her like she's their own. But I really want to see our daughter grow up, Callen."
"You will. Kens isn't going to let anything happen to her best friend."
"Kens couldn't stop that wreck."
"No, but now that you're here, in her home, she's going to keep you safe."
"What if I'm scared for us?"
"Don't worry about us."
"Really? Cause all the anger I've got for that....for Joelle has been building and building and building, before this, and it's gotta go somewhere. I don't want it to be at you."
"Take it out on Sam. He said some mean things about Kensi..." And you, he thought.
"Yeah, well..." It's not all Sam's fault, she wanted to say. Sam wasn't the one who had run when she was pregnant, wasn't the one who let a pretty face and great body totally distract him, the one who should have known better.
"What?"
"Nothing. Not a thing ."
"KC, talk to me."
"Joelle? Really?"
"What about her?"
All her questions boiled down to one. "Why her?"
"I don't know. I guess I just wanted to have someone in my life..."
"I wasn't the one who walk...no, correction, SPRINTED, out."
"I know. I'm an idiot. I never should have left you, and for that, I'm sorry."
"That's not even what I'm mad about...anymore. There's all new stuff."
"Like what?"
"If you had gone out and actually said you wanted someone completely different, then maybe you might have found someone more different than she is from me, but I doubt it."
"I don't understand what you're trying to tell me."
"The only thing she and I have in common is that, if I do say so myself, we have both have good, great, looks. That's the only thing."
"She has nowhere near as good looks as you."
"Is that all you saw in me?" came out, even though she didn't mean it to. "I mean, is that what you wanted? Is that why you left when you did?"
"Your looks? No way. Yeah, you're beautiful, but you're also smart, kind, caring, loving, sweet..... Maybe other things too."
She looked at him like she wasn't sure she believed him. "I was never gonna be the perfect 'little woman' like you wanted..." She wasn't even sure if he had wanted it, but "like you got with her. Or thought you did anyway."
"I don't want the perfect woman. That's stupid. I would murder myself if I ever settled for that.'
"You had her, G. Even as little as I was around, I saw that. So did other people."
"Really? She wasn't as sweet as people think."
"Obviously," she said, cracking a little smile at the humor of that remark, given the circumstances. "But she acted like it. Hell, she's still got your partner fooled."
"Yeah. I don't think I can convince him either."
"Babe, something will. That's what scares me. I just hope...I hope it's not anyone else getting hurt before he sees." She slipped on the endearment.
"Babe?" He let it go. "No-one else will get hurt."
"Slip of the tongue," she covered. "You don't know that. She and I seem to have one very important thing in common. We don't stop until we get what we want."
"But you have your limits."
"Depends on what it is. There are some things, some people, I would move heaven and earth for."
"Kensi and Alina."
"Yes." But they weren't the only ones.
"That makes sense."
"You don't."
"I don't make sense?"
She shook her head. "I should be over it by now."
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm talking about tonight. I didn't...I didn't do it for Alina. Not completely anyway. I should be over this by now, but I'm not."
"You did this for you? There's nothing wrong with that."
"You are completely obtuse sometimes, Callen. I did it for you. Because I still cannot stand for anything bad to happen to you. Not because Ali would lose the daddy that she adores, but because I don't want...I don't want anything bad to happen to you." The trouble was that she didn't know if it was like Kensi felt about Jack or like she felt about Deeks.
"For me? You're sweet," smiled Callen.
She knew it didn't matter what the reasoning was anymore. "I'm gonna go check on Kens. Make sure she's okay. Can you watch Ali for a minute? Just call me if she needs me, okay?"
"I'm her dad. I'm sure I can help her."
She wasn't sure at all, with his chest as beaten and banged up as he was and with his arm broken, but didn't say anything as she quickly moved out. Callen watched her go, and then slowly got up to pick up his sleeping angel of a daughter. ************** Deeks was the one who saw KC's tears first. "Why don't I just run out and pick us up some breakfast?" He asked, letting Kensi go.
"Okay." Kensi kissed him and then turned to her friend. "What did he do?What do I need to fix him for?"
"He's not the one who needs fixing." KC wiped her eyes. "I didn't mean to run Deeks off."
"He'll be fine. What happened?"
"Just par for the course. I think every time in the past year I've tried talking to him I've ended up crying or throwing things."
"Do you want me to do something?"
"You can't, Kens. I just...I just need to learn to let go."
"No, he needs to understand that he stuffed up and hurt you."
"He does. Only he thinks it was just a year ago."
"It's not?"
She shook her head.
"Tell me."
"I think I still love him. And I think it might be like you love Deeks. You know, not because you love him as a person that you cared about at one time, but someone that you're supposed to be with. Only problem is I'm finding this out about a year too late. On one hand I want to scream at him for not seeing through her. On the other, I'm so scared cause I almost lost him and still could, only I haven't had him in about a year. Maybe I never did."
"It's never too late. Tell him you love him."
"And what if he doesn't feel the same way? We have to make this work, Kens. For Alina's sake if no one else's."
"He still loves you, otherwise he wouldn't have called you for help."
"Except the person he would have called still doesn't believe what happened. And he didn't call me. He called you."
"Sam is an idiot. When?"
"Tonight. Your phone rang and I didn't want it to wake you, so I answered. He called you."
"Oh... But he told you. He didn't hang up or anything."
"We're trying to get along, for Ali's sake. And he needed help. She drugged him, Kens."
"Trust me. If he didn't to talk to you, he would have hung up. Maybe he was scared to call you?"
"Now you're reaching."
"No, I don't think I am."
"You're trying to come out with the outcome that you want to work."
"I want to see you happy..."
"I know. And I will be. I just don't know that it'll be anytime soon. Or with him."
Kensi looked at her friend, feeling really horrible for her. "It will work, I swear."
"You know what scares me?"
"What?"
"I remember saying the exact same thing to you about Jack. And that came out okay, right? If he wasn't such a jerk, you wouldn't have Deeks."
"True...."
