Greg just lay there, bleeding and in pain, unable to move or defend himself from blow after blow. All he could think about was Morgan, and how much he loved her. He was regretting overhearing the gang's conversation about a murder they had committed, but he hadn't been able to tell anyone. He hadn't even made it to work before they started beating him up.
Nick pulled up in the parking lot. All he saw was someone beating someone up. He ran into the gang, his gun raised. "Stop!"
Greg heard his friend but didn't make any noise. He waited for gunshots, but they didn't come. Instead he felt people get off him and fists stop hitting him. Nick fired, somewhere that it was safe without hurting anyone but wanting to bring help from inside. As it cleared, he saw it was Greg.
Russell and Morgan came running up from behind, having just arrived themselves. "What happened?"
"It's Greg." That was the last thing he'd ever wanted to say to Morgan, knowing first hand how bad it hurt to have someone you loved hurt and not being able to do anything for them.
Morgan dropped to her knees next to Greg. Her tears fell and mixed with his blood as she tried to stop the bleeding from many different injuries.
"It'll be okay, baby," she whispered where only he could hear, not caring if the concrete was burning her legs. She wished she had something to protect him from the ground and thought of her jacket in her kit, putting it under him as a pillow.
Greg tried to respond to her, but it came out as a gurgle instead.
"For once in your life, be quiet, okay?" She said it as a joke, but she was trembling slightly, barely able to be noticed by Russell and Nick, who was on the phone for an ambulance.
"Love....you...."
"Love you too, babe. I'm right here. I won't leave you. I'm staying right here." She held his hand, remembering being shot and Greg taking turns in silent vigil with her father.
Greg squeezed her hand.
She smiled for him, only partially hearing her dad, Sara, and Finn join them, her focus on Greg. "Stay awake for me, okay? Keep your eyes open. Stay awake."
"I'm awake," he whispered.
"I know. Stay awake. You don't have to talk to me, but just stay awake. Hold my hands, okay?" She felt a hand on her shoulder and shrugged it off, focused on him.
"Morgan, let the medics take over," said Russell gently.
"I'll be right here, okay? Right behind you." She knew they probably wouldn't let her go with him.
"Morgan....."
She allowed Finn and Sara to help her up and held Sara's hand, needing comfort from her 'sister'.
"I'll drive you down," said Sara.
"Thank you." Her voice trembled as she held back the tears, refusing to cry, not until Greg left at the very least.
Sara hugged her friend, knowing how scared she was. As the ambulance left, the tears started. Morgan tried to hide them. Sara saw the tears and took her to the car, not saying anything. Finn talked to Nick about what he'd seen.
"They wanted to kill him."
