"Okay." He moved the phone from his ear. "Morgan!"

Morgan stopped what she was doing and hurried over to Nick, her eyes obviously worried. She'd always liked her coworkers, but over the past year, they'd become family. "You okay, Nick?"

"Sara wants you."

Morgan looked puzzled at first and then nodded, realizing. Her first words to her 'sister' were, "Sara, I think he's okay. He is shot, is bleeding, but the ambulance is already on the way and obviously he's alert. I just think he ought to get checked out. So would Dad and Russell."

"Sara, listen to me. By the time you get here, he's going to be at the hospital. Go to the hospital, okay?"
"Okay, but take care of him."
"I've got to stay with the scene, but I promise that he'll be in good hands. He'll be okay."
"All right," Sara whispered.
"I'm going to give Nick back to you." She handed her friend his cell phone back.
"Nicky, be careful."
"I love you, babe. I'll see you soon, okay? Who knows, maybe Russell will let us go home a little early..."
"Nick!"
"I'm here, babe. The medics want me to put the phone up. I'll see you at the hospital." He couldn't hear her, but hung up, knowing he would see her soon.
Greg was looking at his phone and looked up as he heard Sara hang up. "Morgan just texted me. Go. We'll be there when we can. You need anyone, you call me, okay?"
"Thanks, Greggo." Sara ran to her car and drove to the hospital.
*****
Sara got to the hospital and ran in, stopping the first person she saw to ask about Nick. "I'm sorry. Who?"
"Nick Stokes. He should have been here by now."
"That CSI that was coming in," a nurse said, remembering the name. "He hasn't gotten here yet."
"What?"
"He must have decided not to come in. He wouldn't be the first cop to play a tough guy, walk off." The first walked off, obviously not worried.
It was obvious that the second nurse wasn't buying that. "He was supposed to come in, but he hasn't yet."
"Where is he?"
"I'll try to raise the medics. I'm sure we can find out what's going on." But when she came back, it was the opposite.
"What happened?" Sara was starting to worry.
"No response."
"I have to call him." She frantically dialed his number, but hung up when there was no answer.
Sara then called Greg, glad that he answered. "Hey, Sar. How's he doing?" He wasn't worried; Morgan had assured him that it wasn't that serious.
"He's not here. They can't find the ambulance."
"The cell service was spotty when I talked to Morgan and you lost Nick for a little while, right? Maybe they just can't reach them. It was a long way out to the scene and then a long way back."
"He should have been here by now. Where is he?"
"Sara. Breathe. We'll figure this out."
"He's hurt, Greg, and now missing."
"And he's Nicky. He was buried alive for how many hours? He's got this. No problem. We'll find him."
Sara didn't want to look; she just wanted him there.
"You stay at the hospital. If Morgan's through tearing the cop a new one, she'll be on her way back. I'll call her and have her keep a lookout, okay?"
"Can you come?"
"Yeah. I'm at the lab right now. I'll drop off the evidence and I'm on my way to you."
"Thank you."
"Nothing you guys haven't done for me. He's okay." He hung up and called Morgan. Sara dropped into a chair, tears flowing down her cheeks.
Finn had stopped by at the scene to check on Morgan when Greg called Morgan to let her know about Nick. "Can I leave the evidence in your custody? I've got to get back to Vegas." Morgan filled her in on what all had happened.

"Thanks." She meant not only for finishing up for them, but for letting her go instead of insisting on going herself. Finn had more time on the job than she did, so she could have easily said to stay, but that would have driven Morgan crazy, knowing how scared Sara was, knowing that Greg and Nick needed her. She started the long drive back and got about halfway before she saw the ambulance. It didn't seem to have anything wrong with it, but it was stopped on the side of the road. When she got closer, she saw the medics and thought she would be sick. After calling for Nick several times, she called it in.

She called Greg as she kept searching for any sign of what had happened.

"Yeah, someone needs to. I'm going to look here. Maybe he escaped. Maybe." She could see her own escape, remember the feeling of freedom that had come over her, and then remembered the fire from the bullet as it entered her body.
