Castle took her hand in his and held it tightly, not wishing to ever let go.

He was asleep as well by the time the others were allowed to go back. Ryan and Esposito just wanted one look at her, just to make sure she was really alive, really going to be all right. They went into the hall quickly after, leaving just the three biological family members.

"Do you think Castle's building has security cameras?" asked Ryan.

"Probably. I'm also going to check with the alarm company. I can't see anyone just letting a crazed fan in, so how did she get there?" He paused. "One of us needs to talk with Alexis."

"I'll do that. She's pretty close with me."

"Do me a favor. Hang around Lanie now and then. I'm worried about her. Last time Beckett was hurt..."

"You should hang around her. She loves you."
"I need to work at catching whoever hurt her. I can't...I can't stand around here doing nothing."
"Neither can I."
"One of us needs to stay. You said it yourself, you're closer to Alexis and Mrs. R."
"Okay. But be quick."
"Aye aye," he said in his best smart ass tone before going to work.
Ryan turned back to look at Kate and her family before knocking softly on the door. Martha was standing between Alexis and Jim, her hands on her granddaughter's shoulders to support her. It scared her how quiet Alexis had been; she was as worried about Alexis as she was her son and Katharine.
"Sorry to interrupt. Can I borrow Alexis?"
Alexis looked at her Gram. "It's okay, Martha. Go with her. I'll stay with the kids, come get you if either wake up," Jim promised, earning a grateful look from Martha before she walked out with her granddaughter.
"Alexis, I need to ask you something. It's okay if you don't know or don't remember, okay?"
"Okay." Alexis said very quietly.
"Do you remember seeing the girl that hurt Kate?"
"Yeah." Martha sat with her, holding her hand.
"Can you tell me what she looked like?"
The more details she gave, the more she found she could remember. Age, height, hair and eye color, skin color, ear piercing only, no visible tattoos.
"Do you recognize her from anywhere?"
"No." She paused. "She wasn't from a case?"
"I don't think so. Certainly not ones we worked with Beckett and your dad. Do you have security cameras in your building?"
"Richard made sure of it before he moved in," Martha answered.
Alexis nodded. "He's always been so protective. I remember I had a blog once and he got upset. I was always getting The Lecture."
"He just wanted you to be safe, sweetheart," Martha said, hugging her slightly.
"Do you think I would be able to get the footage?"
"I'll call Carl and make sure a copy gets sent to the precinct. Will you be all right, sweetheart?" Martha waited for Alexis to nod before walking away to use her cell phone.
"She's going to be okay Alexis," said Ryan gently.
"Why isn't she awake yet?"
"She's just sleeping. The doctor told me that she's going to get better soon. I think she wanted to see everyone and your dad convinced her to rest first."
"Why is this always happening to them?"
"I don't know."
She nodded, but still looked scared.
"I promise you Alexis, I will do everything I can to help them."
"I know you will. And Esposito and Lanie."
"We all will. We love you too much to see you hurting."
"Remember when I worked with the precinct?" She didn't wait for her response. "I worked with Lanie, not Kate, but I learned...when something feels right. And it doesn't. It feels like I'm missing something."
"Like what?"
"I don't know. Maybe it's just the fact that I can't help her."
"It's not your job. You should be focusing on your schooling."
"That doesn't help tonight."
"Tonight, you rest too and we will look after things."
"You should go see Jenny and Sarah. That's what Kate would want."
"I will, but not until you are alright."
"I don't think anyone will be okay until she is."
"True. She has a way of getting everyone wrapped around her finger," smiled Ryan.
"You've met my mother. I know she went to the precinct when Dad first started working with Kate. What do you think of her?"
"Honestly? I don't like her. The way she treats your father is appalling. And she's never there for you either." He felt bad for the way he was talking about her mother.
"She hasn't visited me since I was sick. She wasn't there for my graduation. She's never been there for me to talk to, about guys, about girl stuff, about Dad driving me crazy, about anything. And even when I was little, Dad was my parent. He took care of me. Totally." She paused. "She's my mother. Without her, I wouldn't be on this planet. But without Kate? I can't even imagine. Meredith may be my mother, but Kate's my mom."
Ryan smiled. "That's sweet. It's no wonder Kate loves you."
"Even when I was kidnapped...it was Gram and Kate waiting for us to come home. Now I can't do anything to help her."
"You can help. Stay with her and just be there if she needs you."
She nodded, watching Martha come back. "I sent the video in care of Captain Gates."
"Okay. I'll call Javi to check them out."
She nodded. "Darling, can you go check on your father and Jim?" Alexis nodded, knowing she was being gotten rid of but not caring in the scheme of things. Martha waited until Alexis was inside the room. "Richard installed an program on all our phones that works with the security camera. I never use it. I didn't even think about it until..." She paused, bringing up the picture. "That girl was at Richard's last book signing. I remember because she tried to get into the party as well, but he's gotten so paranoid about security, especially when he started dating Katherine. That's why I remember, because Gina had to get security to escort her out."
"Did you get a name? Or did Gina?"
"I tried to call her, but she's not answering. Not a surprise. I did leave a message on her machine, her voicemail, and with her service." There was one good thing that came of her ex-daughter-in-law still being her son's publisher.
"I'll get onto that. Look after Alexis, she's hurting and scared."
"Of course." It was why she'd made Alexis go into the hospital room instead of letting her listen. "Please be careful." She knew Katherine and Richard thought of the cops as brothers.
