"Kate, are you hungry?" called Castle from the kitchen where he was making breakfast.
Alexis hurried to the kitchen to take over for him. "You're supposed to be resting." She and Martha had fussed nonstop over him since he'd come home from the hospital.
"I'm fine. Besides, it's apparently been two months since I did any of this."
He still didn't remember, but he wanted to make up for everything.
"Kate did it. When she was home."
"So it's my turn. Go sit down a bit."
"Dad..."
"Richard..." Martha had heard the squabbling and came to check on them.
"I'm fine mother. Don't make me call Kate in here."
"Katherine's not here." Martha told him. "She got called in this morning. I heard her leave."
"What? But I was supposed to go with her."
"No, Dad. It's too soon. You need to rest." Alexis fussed at him.
"I have to make a statement. Then I was coming home. I'll just drive myself."
"In what car? The Ferrari?" Martha frowned. "I'll have a car sent. If you promise to come home."
"I promise mother." Unless something comes up, he thought.
"Please, Dad. This police work...it almost got Kate killed and now you. Please." Alexis said softly
"I'll be fine Alexis. I swear."
"This is not fine!" She turned and went to her room.
"She's scared, Richard. When things get back to normal..." Martha started.
"I know mother. I'm scared too. When Kate told me in the hospital that it had been two months, I got really scared cause I didn't know what had happened. She shows me the photo of the dumpster and I couldn't remember it."
"This isn't about the case, Richard. It's about your family. Alexis is scared to death. Nightmares like she hasn't had since the kidnapping. Only this time Katharine hasn't been home because she's killing herself trying to find you, then what happened to you. It's about your family, not the story, not the case."
"What do you want me to do? I can't fix this if I can't remember anything. I need to be at the precinct, if only to find out what happened to me so I can help my family."
"I want you to stay here where you're safe."
"I am safe. Never more than when I'm with Kate and the guys."
She knew arguing more was futile and called for the car. Castle hated arguing with his family, but he had to do this. He needed to figure things out before it drove him crazy.
********
Kate, for her part, was arguing with her own family. Esposito and Ryan both now believed that Castle knew something he wasn't telling them, maybe even that the evidence was true, that he'd ditched their wedding and got caught. She'd heard them saying it when she came into the bullpen that morning. As tired and stressed as she had been for two months, she was cranky and wasn't willing to let it go this time.
"Hey Beckett. We got something," said Espo.
"What is it, Espo?"
"Evidence." He could tell she wasn't happy.
"If this is another railroad attempt, you can take a long walk off a short pier." But she got up and looked at it.
"We were shocked when we found this. Castle got a message the day after he went missing. Never replied to it, never called the number."
"So? Maybe he didn't recognize the number. Maybe for some reason he couldn't call it." She looked at the number. "Shut the front door."
She grabbed her stuff and went out the door, pulling out her cell phone on the way.
"Hello?"
"I want to meet. Yesterday. I know you're in the country."
"Why?"
"You know damned well why. Set up the place, set up a time today, and I'll meet you there, but I want to meet. You don't want me to say this over the phone."
"Fine. Central Park, north side."
"When?"
"One hour."
She hung up on him and went back upstairs. She knew the debt she owed him: Castle and Alexis were alive because of him. She shouldn't have to remind herself of that every encounter with the man just to keep from shooting him.
"That number was nothing, guys. I'll take care of it."
"Want us to come along? Castle should be here to make his statement soon."
"No. Just do me a favor. Take it easy on him. Treat him like the victim he is. Not for him. For me. For the fact that you BOTH used to call him your partner."
"Gates is taking the statement. She overheard us earlier and is sort of pissed with us for hating him without a reason."
"If Gates is taking his side, you know you guys were acting like jerks." She paused, wishing she could stay, but she wanted to meet Jackson. She slipped downstairs and out of the precinct.
"She's right you know, we are jerks."
"Hey, man, you started it." Ryan paused. "I wonder what's so special about that number. Beckett wouldn't have acted like that, wouldn't have left before his interrogation, if something weren't going on."
"Let's get Tori to check it out."
"I'll do it. You're already in trouble with Beckett, you don't need trouble with Lanie too."
"You are in trouble as well man."
"Hey, I'm just in trouble with Beckett. Do you really want Lanie to find out you've been talking with Tori?"
"We're friends and nothing more."
"Try selling that to her. Especially right now." Lanie had done the majority of the caretaking Kate would allow the last few months.
Castle walked in just as they said that. "Hey guys."
"Gates is waiting for you in her office," said Espo.
"Hey, Castle. Do you remember this number?" Ryan knew he was taking a leap, but he wanted his friend to be innocent.
"It's familiar, but I don't know who it belongs to. Why? Where's Kate?"
"She saw this number, made a phone call, and took off." Ryan told him. "That's why I was wondering if you remembered it."
"Call it. I have a statement to make. Why is Gates doing it?"
"Gates thought it would be best," Esposito said, unable to look his friend in the eye.
"Sure. I heard what you guys have been thinking. I did not ditch my family. Thanks for being so supportive and trusting me." Castle walked off to the captain's office.
Behind him, he could hear the guys arguing about who might have told him.

Beckett sat on a bench in the spot where her father-in-law liked to come when he was in the city. Jackson watched a few minutes, then approached when he was sure she was alone.
"Kate."
Alexis hurried to the kitchen to take over for him. "You're supposed to be resting." She and Martha had fussed nonstop over him since he'd come home from the hospital.
