"Donee Lanie." Kate mumbled.

"It's not up for debate this time, Mom." Alexis said softly. "You wouldn't let Dad get away with not getting checked out."

"She's right. Time for you to get looked after for once," said Castle.
She started to say he looked out for her, but under the circumstances, she knew it wasn't true. Lanie finally knocked in the door and Martha opened it. She greeted everyone briefly before turning her attention to Kate.
"Hey, Lanie." Kate whispered.
"Hi honey. What's wrong?"
"I got sick again."
"Lay down." She moved to her friend's side.
She did as her friend asked as Martha ushered Alexis out.
"Castle, can you get me some fresh water."
"Yeah," he said, not liking being apart from Kate even for that little time.
Lanie bent next to the couch and checked Kate's temperature.
"Rick has a thermometer in one of the bathrooms."
"I have one here. And my doctor's bag."
"Is it the cadaver one?"
"No."
"Okay."
Lanie took her thermometer out and used it on Kate. Her temperature came back as 104 degrees.
Castle came back with the water. "What is it, Lanie?"
"Fever."
"Of what? 100?"
"104."
"Mother," he called upstairs to where Martha's head popped up. "Can you get Kate's bag? It's in the closet."
"Of course. What's wrong?"
"Don't know yet." He waited until his mom went to get the bag. "Sweetheart, why didn't you tell me you were sick?" He thought it was just nerves and hated himself for yelling at her before.
"Don't want you to worry. It's not fair for you. You have other things on your mind."
"Kate. 104."
"I'm okay."
"Listen to me carefully. This. is. not. okay."
He looked at Lanie. "If she has the flu or whatever, that doesn't explain her throwing up like this for two months."
"It's not the flu. That's for sure."
Lanie had a feeling she knew exactly what it was, but wasn't going to say anything until a doctor could check her.

Martha came back with a bag, followed by a terrified Alexis. "It's okay, sweetheart," Kate said as soon as she saw her stepdaughter.

"Rick, breathe." If she'd had her strength, she could have killed him for scaring Alexis.

"He's right, Mom." She helped do whatever she could to get Kate out the door to help.

"Do you want me to call the boys?" Lanie asked Castle as they waited for the doctor.
"I don't know. I guess we should."
She nodded, leaving Castle with Alexis and Martha. "Kate's going to be okay, right?"
"Yes, of course dear," said Martha.
"Dad?" Alexis looked at her dad.
"Yeah sweetie."
"She'll be okay?"
"Yes." He didn't believe it though,
She nodded, not really believing it either. "What's taking so long?"
"I don't know."
"Mr. Castle." The nurse came out to speak to them finally.
"Yes?"
"She's awake."
"Can we see her?"
She nodded. "We've got her and the baby on a monitor."
"Baby? What baby?"
"She's ten weeks pregnant. Her doctor said she's under a lot of stress."
"Pregnant? How can that be?"
"She likely didn't know it herself."
"Okay. Thank you."
"Doctor, is the fever..." Martha paused. "Could it harm Katherine? Or my grandchild?"
"I doubt it, but we will monitor both to make sure."
"Thank you," she said, relieved.
"No problem."
"Darling, go see Katherine. Alexis and I will be there soon."
"Thank you mother."
She nodded, kissing his cheek.
Castle left. "Kate?"
"Hey, babe," she whispered.
"Are you feeling better?"
"So tired." She paused. "Are you okay? Alexis?"
"We're fine. You're pregnant?"
"I'm what?"
She nodded. "I didn't...I didn't know. Maybe I didn't want to know."
"It's okay."
"Is it?"
"Yes."
"Two...two months ago, I would have been shouting from the rooftops."
"A lot has happened. It's not your fault."
Her eyes closed and then opened again.
"You should rest, I'll be here still."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
She closed her eyes. He sat down, holding her hand in his own. Alexis crept into the room, not wanting to interrupt, but needing to see for herself Kate was okay.
"Come here darling," said Castle.
She sat beside him.
"She's gonna be fine Alexis."
"The nurse told Gram she would, but if her fever's high enough, it'll hurt Kate and the baby."
"No it won't. I promise."
She couldn't put into words what she felt, but during the past two months, Kate had been there for her as they'd both been there for Martha.
"Everything is going to be fine. You'll have a little brother or sister soon."
"I should have known she wasn't okay."
"How? She's stubborn."

"Throwing up like that. I should have told Lanie, but I didn't want to make things worse for Kate. Add more stress."

"It's okay sweetheart. It's not your fault." It's mine, he thought, I was gone so long, and she was so afraid for me that she wouldn't take care of herself.
