"Ryan's here. And Kaya needs you."
"K is fast asleep finally. And you are my baby too. If you need me, I'll come."
"I don't know what I need, Dad." She paused. "Is she going to be kay?"
"Of course, she has a strong sister on her side."
"Right?"
"Daddy." She never called him that anymore unless something horrible had happened, which it had.
"I'm here sweetheart, just tell me what you need."
Ryan took the phone from her, cradling her against him. "H?"
"Ryan, is she okay?"
"She thinks Natalia doesn't want her around Kaya, blames her for what happened. I know she blames herself. This is not okay."
"She's so upset she's making herself sick."
"None of that is true. Nat just wants to spend more time with her daughter, which I guess I can understand. I think they need to sit down and talk things out. As for making herself sick, just keep her away from the bathroom, she'll stop herself if it's needed."
Ryan thought there was more to it than that, but knew if he pushed any further, Horatio would not listen, back off. "Have a good night, H."
"Call if she needs me."
Ryan almost retorted 'why, what would you do', but didn't want to start a fight. He hung up, carrying Lina to the couch.
"Ryan, please don't leave me."
"I'm here, baby. You're going to be okay. Can I just go get you a Sprite? Maybe that little trashcan, just in case?"
She nodded, though she watched his every move until he returned.
He put the trashcan where she could reach it if she needed, putting the warm Sprite nearby. "Do you need a blanket?"
"Only if you share with me."
He settled beside her on the couch, covering her with the blanket, coaxing her to drink, not mentioning the kidnapping or her family, just holding her.
"I love you."
"I love you too, babe. Get some rest."
"Are you staying?"
"I'm right here, sweetheart."
She nodded, resting on him, her eyes closing instantly. He didn't budge all night, didn't close his eyes once. In between nightmares, he watched movies with closed captioning, the sound down low. Lina woke early the next morning, exhausted but feeling a little better. She realised she had slept on Ryan the whole night.
Ryan looked up when she moved, and he wrapped her in his arms again. "Morning."
"Morning."
"Feeling any better?"
Not really, she thought to herself. "Yeah."
"Promise?"
"Absolutely."
"Don't lie to me."
"I promise."
"Okay. Hungry?"
She shook her head. "Not really."
"Drink?"
She motioned to her diet sprite still sitting there from the night before, only about half drank.
"I'll get you a fresh one."
"I'm okay." She paused. "Are you going in to work today?"
"No. Why?"
"Why wouldn't you?"
"It's my day off, and I want to spend it with you."
"I'm going in."
"What? No, you can't leave me alone," he pouted, smiling though.
"Dad and Natalia will be staying with Kaya. I haven't got the slightest what Calleigh and Eric will do. And it's your day off. I need to go in."
"Then I'll come in too."
"Okay." She didn't argue, but her tone left it clear that she didn't care if he did or not.
"Lina, what's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong. I'm fine. I need to get ready."
"Lina, talk to me."
"About what?"
"Why you're so upset."
"Ryan, listen very carefully, because I'm getting tired of repeating myself. Nothing is wrong. I am fine. I need to get ready to go."
Ryan watched her walk off, worried about her.
**********
Calleigh looked up, surprised, when Ryan came in with Lina. "Hey. I thought you had the day off." And she'd assumed that Lina would be taking the day off to spend with her family.
"I don't want to be alone, so I came in. What can I help with?"
"It's a slow morning, actually, which is good. Horatio and Natalia are staying with Kaya. I kinda figured that you and Lina would as well. I've got some members of other shifts that volunteered to pitch in if we need." Everyone knew Horatio and quite a few knew Natalia.
"I can help," he said, wanting to tell her the truth but not with Lina around.
Lina walked to the coroner's lab, Eric following her, as worried as Calleigh and Ryan were.
"I came in cause I'm worried about her."
"We are too. It's bad enough what happened to Kaya, but Eric told me what happened to Lina...Did Horatio ever call last night?"
"Yes, but he seemed to think she'd just get over it if he said too."
"I don't understand how a man that is so caring when it comes to others, victims, his people, well, most of his people, even Kaya, can be so stubborn, so blind, when it comes to Lina. I mean, he's my second dad, the closest thing to a real one I ever had, and he treats me, he treats Kaya, totally different than he treats her. But then again, he treats you and Walter different than he does Eric."
"I think it has something to do with you guys being hurt the way you have."
"Lina's been kidnapped. She's diabetic and her blood sugar has dropped dangerously low twice since I've known her. She's got a history of anorexia. What does she have to do?"
"I don't think he means to treat her that way, I just don't think he realises she's just a girl really."
"He puts such a high standard on himself. I think it extends to her and Kyle. And Kaya's just a baby, but it's already starting a little with her. It's just...I guess it's the mommy coming out in me. I see someone hurting and I want to fix it."
"You and me both. But she won't talk to me, how is she going to talk to him?"
"Knowing Lina? She'll probably get angry enough that it'll all come out at once."
"K is fast asleep finally. And you are my baby too. If you need me, I'll come."
"I don't know what I need, Dad." She paused. "Is she going to be kay?"
