Kaya left the school yard, looking around to find Lina. She couldn't see her sister's car, which was odd, so she started walking around to the side street where she thought that Lina may have parked. Lina started walking towards the school. She'd been late and she'd had to park farther away than normal. She saw Kaya and started walking faster, waving at her. Out of nowhere, a man she'd never seen approached her baby sister. Kaya saw the man come up to her. She didn't know him. She stopped and started walking bacwards, towards a teacher she had seen a moment ago.
The guy tried to grab Kaya's bag. "Kaya, run!"
Kaya dropped her bag and ran, heading for the safety of the school. But she didn't reach the teacher. The man managed to grab her, kicking and screaming.
Lina ran at him. "Let her go!" She didn't even register the teacher calling 911, just that a stranger had her sister.
"Piss off!" the man shouted at Lina as he dragged Kaya towards a car.
She tackled him and as she did, another man from the van took Kaya, pulling her inside.
"LINA!" screamed Kaya fearfully.
"C'mon, man! Leave her!" The second guy took the first by the hand, pulling him inside as well. Even at that, Lina kicked off her shoes and ran as far as she could, getting the plate, but knowing before she even had it ran that it would come back stolen.
Kaya kept screaming as they drove off. The schoolyard was full of Hummers by the time Lina returned.
"Lina! Thank god you're okay," Horatio said as he hugged her.
She couldn't push him away, since he had lost a daughter, but she didn't want to be hugged, be touched. "Where's Nat?" She asked quietly.
"Behind you. Lina, what happened?"
"Nat..." She paused. "Nat, I'm so sorry. I tried..." It was obvious to see how hard she'd tried.
"It's okay, this is not your fault."
"I just...When he grabbed her, I shouted for her to run. She ran back towards the teacher. Maybe if I'd been more prepared, if I'd had my gun..." She rarely carried it because Kaya felt uncomfortable with it.
"Lina, stop. This is not your fault. I don't blame you."
"Sweetheart, we're just so glad you're safe." Horatio knew why she was so scared though. She and Kaya had been close almost before he and Natalia had gotten together, but it was more than that. It brought back memories of a time that he and his daughter both wanted to forget.
"I'm fine, Dad. I got the license plate, the make and model of the car, but I think it was probably stolen. They didn't...They didn't use any names. Didn't even call Kaya or me by name. I don't know if they didn't know or just didn't say them." She tried to think. She wanted to pace but her feet were so beat up from running barefoot that she knew it would hurt too badly.
"We can deal with that when you calm down." Natalia gave her a hug.
"I'm not going to calm down until we find her." She saw Calleigh talking to the teacher Kaya had been running to. Lina had met her a handful of times but couldn't have recalled the name right then if she'd been paid to.
"We'll find her, sweetheart, but you being upset is not going to help us do that." Horatio meant well, but the words made his daughter's eyes flash, flare, obviously angry.
"Alright. Lina, why don't you help Calliegh. Horatio, let's backtrack a bit."
Lina nodded, slipping her shoes back on, approaching her friend.
"Hey, how are you holding up?" Calleigh asked softly.
"I just want her back, Cal. I just want her home." She felt like crying. "Where are the guys?"
"On their way. We'll get her back, I promise."
"Ms Ortiz...did you know the men? Had you seen them before?" Lina asked, finally remembering her name.
"Yes, I think I've seen them here. But Kaya always goes straight to you, so it's never been a problem."
Lina was quiet for a long while before asking, "Did you know their names? Where they came from? What they were doing here? I know Natalia has to clear anyone that can pick Kaya up from the office. Do they all have to do that?"
"I've never spoken to them. One os named James, I think. But even if they were going to pick Kaya up, they would have to go to the office, and Miss Boavista would have to have had called in the morning."
"Right. I just was wondering if maybe they would have signed in. Been on some list of some sort." Either to pick another child up, sign in to be on campus, anything at this point would help.
"I can call up to the office and check if you like."
"Thank you."
Ms Ortiz pulled out the school mobile and called the office, nodding a moment later. "They didn't sign in today, but earlier this week, they may have."
"We should check that out." Inside her head, she could still hear Kaya screaming, frightened.
"Go ahead, the office staff are waiting for you."
She walked with a slight limp towards the office. Amelia was waiting when Lina came in. She had the register open in front of her to the page with the possible signature of the kidnapper.
"Has there been any substitutes yet? Anything odd?" Lina asked.
"We had a sub come in two days ago. He's never been here before, but it wasn't one of the guys today."
"Ms Ortiz says she's seen those guys before. Do you remember what they were here for?"
"They wanted to look at the school, said they were thinking of sending their kid here."
She took note of the names in the book, but felt certain they would be fake as well. "Thank you," she said softly, feeling lost as she walked back out.
"Any luck?" asked Calleigh.
"Some names. Maybe if I sit down with the police artist, they can run something. Or there should be cameras inside the school."
The guy tried to grab Kaya's bag. "Kaya, run!"
