Kensi pulled out her phone and dialed her friend's number, hating the news she was about to give.
"Yeah, Kens." KC said offhandedly, thinking it was another girl call as they had so often.
"Where are you?" Kensi tried to make her tone light and cheery.
"Home with Ali. Why?" She could tell when Kensi was being too cheerful. "What's up? Where are you?"
"I need to talk to you about something. But I can't do it on the phone."
"Kensi. Where are you?" She asked again, spacing each word.
"At a crime scene. KC, I really need to tell you something."
"You wouldn't be calling me from a crime scene unless..." She paused. "Kensi, where are you and where is Callen?" Deeks mattered too of course, but Kensi's responses would be different.
Kensi hesitated. "Callen's in a really bad way KC."
"Either tell me where he is or put Deeks on the phone so he'll tell me."
"He's still here with us. The CDC doctors are taking him to Druid Hills in Georgia for treatment."
"Oh, my God." Her world reeled and she had to sit, but she didn't fall.
"KC?"
"I need a sitter. I've...I'm already packed but I can't take Alina with us. Do...do you think your mom?"
"Maybe Michelle."
"My mum will take her. Of course she will. KC, I'm coming to pick you up. You won't be able to fly with him, but the CDC are happy to let you stay with him in Georgia."
"Can Deeks come instead?" She tried to think of what she needed to do: prepare a baby bag, get the extra key to the house, find the bag she'd packed long ago for herself and for Callen in case...
"You don't want me?" Kensi asked, a little confused.
"I always want you. I need you to stay with Callen. Not because I don't trust Deeks or Sam, but because the only person I want with him if I can't be there is you. Do you understand?" She was afraid he would die before she could get to him and she wanted Kensi there in case.
"Of course I do. Okay. Deeks will fly up with you, and then we can stay of you want, or we can come home to Ali."
"I...I haven't thought that far through." She wanted Kensi with her, but she wanted someone with Alina as well.
"You don't need to. Decide later. I have to go, but I'm sending Deeks right now, and I'm texting my mum to get Ali."
"Okay." She paused. "Kens?"
"Yeah?"
"Are Hetty and Sam there?"
"Yes."
"Good." It might be the only time she said that, especially about Hetty. "Call me." She didn't want to hang up, didn't want to lose her connection.
"Three hours, I'll call you in three hours." Kensi said goodbye and told Deeks to go pick up KC. "I have a bag in the car. Bring it please."
He nodded, kissing her cheek, hurrying off. The whole thing felt like a nightmare. He knew they were lucky that all of them weren't dead, but, right then, at that moment, it didn't feel lucky.
Kensi took Callen's gloved hand in hers and squeezed it, trying to tell him that he was going to be okay.
"Is she coming?" Sam asked, looking a thousand years old.
"Meeting us there. Deeks went to pick her up." Kensi swallowed. "Can you make sure Ali is either with Michelle or my mother?"
"Yeah, I'll call Michelle right now, have her pick her up. She's wanting to help anyway, but I don't want her in Georgia for God knows how long."
"Thank you." Kensi followed Callen out to the waiting plane.
"Hetty," Sam addressed his boss. "KC's coming. Can we wait the plane for her and Deeks?"
"Sure." Hetty nodded, but didn't really like the idea.
"Thank you." He called Michelle, telling her to head over to Callen's and pick up their goddaughter.
Deeks was at Callen's house within half an hour, a record time. He saw Michelle getting out of her car as he walked up to the door and knocked.
KC was ready when Deeks arrived, trying to calm her nerves, trying to remember everything she needed to do.
"Michelle's here too. She's going to take Ali for you."
"Thank you, Michelle," she said numbly. She kissed and hugged her daughter. "Mommy and Daddy will both be back soon, sweet girl." She whispered.
"Mama," Ali babbled sleepily.
"I love you. Have fun with Michelle and Kamran."
"Kam."
She handed the little girl over to Michelle. "There's an extra key to the house in there in case you run out of anything. I don't...I don't know how long we'll be gone."
"Take as much time as you need KC. I've got Ali." Michelle said goodbye and left.
"Ready to go?" asked Deeks.
"No, but yeah."
Deeks took her bags and led her to the car.
"Deeks?"
"Yeah?"
"How bad is it?" She asked, getting into the car and letting him drive away.
"What did Kensi tell you?"
"That he...that he was still alive and that the CDC doctors wanted him in Georgia."
"It's not good. He's really unwell. But they have the antidote, they gave him the first dose as soon as they got it, so they think he'll be alright pretty quickly."
She was relieved to hear that, but wouldn't feel better until she saw him with her own eyes.
"It's going to be okay."
"Yeah, Kens." KC said offhandedly, thinking it was another girl call as they had so often.
