D.B. Russell sat at Finn's side, holding her hand, talking to her. He firmly believed that she heard and understood every word he said and each time he visited, which was often, he told her about cases and about what their family was doing at the lab. It had been two weeks since he'd walked into Finn's apartment and seen the blood on the floor, two weeks since their life had changed. Although he had been told that day that she hadn't changed, Finn seemed different. She had regained some colour in her face, was starting to wake up. She could hear Russell talking to her, could hear that he was worried, and she wanted to reassure him. She just couldn't figure out how to open her eyes yet, and she was still exhausted.
"Finn, the doctor doesn't think you can hear me. They're saying there's no change. You and I know that's bull. You're a fighter. Fight, Jules. For me. For all of us. We're all here for you. Just fight, damn it," he whispered. "Don't let them win."
His words were enough. She finally found a little strength, enough to open her eyes a little and squeeze Russell's hand.
"Hey, sweetheart," he whispered. "Welcome back." He pushed the button for the nurse.
"Where am I?" she whispered. Her voice was hoarse and raspy, but she smiled for him.
"Hospital. You've been here for two weeks."
She frowned. "I was at home, talking to Daniel's daughter."
"I'm not exactly sure what happened. After I caught him, I was afraid to talk to him. I really thought I'd kill him." He made no bones about it. "Morgan and Greg found you. She's been staying with you some, so has Sara."
"He wants to kill his mum."
"I know, Jules. It's okay. It's all over."
She knew he wasn't lying on purpose, but she felt as though it was far from over. And as she was about tell him, a nurse walked in, glaring at Russell.
"Miss Finlay, how are you feeling?"
"I'd be better if you weren't rude to my family and friends."
Russell tried to hide a grin. "I'm glad you're feeling better, but take it one battle at a time for a little while, please," he teased her.
The nurse huffed. "Well, I'll let your doctor know you're awake. Try to rest."
Russell reached for the phone nearby, dialing the familiar number. He waited until Greg picked up the phone. "It's me. Tell the girls...tell the girls she's awake. Call Nick for me too."
"I'm on it. We'll be there soon!" Greg hung up to call their friends.
"Greg and the girls will be here soon," Russell told her as he hung up.
"Okay. What about Nick?" she asked, confused. "Isn't he coming too?"
Russell paused. "He will, but it might take longer. He took that job, in San Diego."
"Good, he deserves it. Don't you guys miss him?"
"Of course we do. We missed you too."
"Is he still dating Sara?"
"I don't know. I don't think so."
"Poor Sara. She must be heartbroken."
"She doesn't talk about it, unless she's been talking to Morgan."
"No offence DB, but I wouldn't talk to you and Greg either."
He laughed for the first time in two weeks. She smiled, despite it hurting her face.
