She shook her head. "Has anyone ever fought on your behalf before?"

She tried to remember. "No."

"No, Finn. You need to fight for yourself. You can fight for Sara if you want, but please. Leave us alone."

"About him camping in your room when he's not working."
"He's been here that much?"
Morgan nodded. "Sara and I have been sitting in here to give him a break, but either he stays here, goes to the cafeteria, or goes back to the lab. With Nick gone, there's no one really to back him up." Not that they needed a leader. They all knew what needed to be done and had been doing their best to cover for Nick, Finn, and Russell as much as he would allow.
"I'll deal with him."
"I don't think 'deal with him' is the right approach." She softly said.
"What should I do?"
"I'm guessing 'get your collective heads out of the...sand...and talk to each other' would not be a good suggestion right now?" Morgan said with a slight smile.
"I'll talk to him if you talk to Greg," smiled Finn.
"Deal." *********************** The only reason Nick was setting foot back in Vegas was Finn. He wanted to be anywhere else. Again and again, he'd had to pay for Grissom's leaving Vegas, he never figured on Sara breaking up with him because of it, but then again, he'd never figured on leaving Vegas at all. He tried to smile when he saw Greg and he was grateful it wasn't Sara or, almost as bad, Morgan picking him up.
"Hey Nicky," said Greg. "You been okay?"
He bit back a retort and just nodded. "You?"
"Not great. Morgan and I are fighting, again."
"Sorry to hear that." He paused. "How's Finn?"
"I haven't been to the hospital yet, but according to Russell, she seems okay. She's arguing with Sara and Morgan."
Nick came close to a smile. "Sounds normal then." He wasn't exactly sure why he was there, only he'd owed it to her and to Russell to come.
"Nick, I think Sara misses you. She hasn't said anything to me, but sometimes I overhear her and Morgan. I think she knows it was a mistake to break up with you."
"Greg, please, stay out of it."
"I'm not getting into it. I'm just warning you that she has to talk to you."
"I'm here to see Finn."
"Alright."
"I've been paying for Grissom's mistakes for six years, if not longer."
"Talk to her. Let her explain things."
"I think she explained pretty well, Greg. She won't even try it because it didn't work with him. Do you know what it took to get her to even try dating me without comparing me to him? Now this."
"Do you blame her? Look what a long distance relationship did to her with him. She hasn't had another experience to compare to it, so she's just doing what she thinks would be best."
"What a surprise," Nick said, grabbing his bag. "Let's go, okay?"
"Okay."
Nick was silent on the way to the hospital. Greg was worried, he knew Nick was hurting, but he knew why Sara had done it. Nick was hurting about Sara, but was angry at Greg as well. He was glad Sara had someone to love her, especially now, but Greg was supposed to be his friend too, his closest with Warrick gone all these years. When they got to the hospital, Morgan was waiting. She gave Greg a smile, hugged Nick and then led them to Finn's room.
"How you doin', kid?" Nick asked her gently.
"I'm okay Nicky. Can I borrow Greg for a moment?"
He nodded. "Play nice," he whispered, smiling slightly at her. He walked into the hospital room and stopped, seeing Russell and Sara there with Finn. He shook it off, approaching Finn. "Hey." He wanted to hug her but was afraid to hurt her.
"Nicky." Finn smiled. "I heard you got the job."
"Yeah, I've been there about a week. I heard you woke up and I wanted to come home and see you. How do you feel?" He smiled for her.
"I'm alright. I'm stuck dealing with the problems between Greg and Morgan, and Sara's problem."
"Let Greg and Morgan fix things on their own. You rest."
"I'm hoping that they are doing just that. But I do need to say something. I won't force you, but I told Sara she has to talk to you, to explain why she wanted to break up, and to try and fix things."
"Jules, just rest, okay? We need you back at your fighting weight," he said more gently than he'd wanted to tell Greg, but it added up to the same 'stay out of it'.
"Please? It'll help me feel better."
"Whatever you say. But please rest. Looks like both of you need to," he said with a side look at Russell, seeing Sara out of the corner of his eye and just that look felt like a punch to his gut.
Sara stood. "We should go outside."
He saw Finn's look. "Bossy," he whispered, earning a smile. "I'll be right back." He looked at his former boss. "You need us to get you anything?"
"No, just go talk."
He walked out with Sara, his arms crossed as soon as they stopped.
"Look, I know this is my fault," said Sara, "and I'm sorry."
"You said what you felt. I'm sorry they're making you feel...anything about it."
"I never stopped feeling. I love you Nick. I shouldn't have broken up with you, but I didn't want something to happen to us and then we wouldn't even be friends."
"Is that what we are now, Sara? Friends?"
"I don't know."

"I loved you. That's too light a word. Love could be for a meal or a dog or even a friend, but there's not really a word to tell how I felt about you. Whatever it is, I did it for years. Long before you came back, or left, or got engaged or even bothered to tell us that you'd been living with Grissom for years. I started when I saw that girl underneath the hotel I was throwing dummies off and I never stopped. So I waited, because I know Grissom. And I was right, but that didn't make me feel better because you were hurting so badly. So I waited. And I overlooked all the times that you pulled away, that you confided in anyone but me, that you kept a space between us, because he'd hurt you in some way. I had no intention of ever leaving Vegas, not because I love the city, but because my family is here. And when I even thought about it, I talked to you. I thought you were happy too. I thought we could work it out somehow. I wanted to. But once again, he won. I'm tired of living with a ghost, Sara. I'm not him. Judge me on me, not on him. Don't you think we've known each other long enough for you to do that?"
"It's not because of him Nick," Sara said, confused. "At least not completely."
"That's funny, because it always is. When I asked you to date, when I asked you to live with me, when I took this job, and God forbid I do what I've wanted to do for two years and ask you to marry me."
Sara opened her mouth to reply, but she stopped, stunned. "What did you just say?"
"Which part?"
"The last part."
"I've wanted to marry you for two years. I knew as soon as I asked you though that you'd think I would divorce you by an email or a damned post-it."
"Marry me? Really?" Her eyes filled with tears. "Nick, I never would have thought that. I know you wouldn't do that to anyone, even me. And it was never you that made me not want a long distance relationship again, that was completely my fault. I was scared."
"I know that, Sara. What I don't know is why. We've known each other for almost sixteen years. What is it going to take for you to get that I would never hurt you?"
"I know you won't hurt me. That's not what scared me. I was afraid that I would do something to hurt you."

"The only thing you could do to hurt me is to do what you did, Sara." He wanted to add that she'd damned near killed him.
