Kate was sick of staring at case files. For the last two days, she had been working on a case by herself. Castle had been out of town with Alexis and Esposito and Ryan were both in court. She had no help whatsoever. The case wasn't a big one, but no one wanted to cooperate with her investigation, so she was getting nowhere. On top of that, she felt bad because she hadn't gotten a present for Castle and Christmas was the next day. She knew he had already gotten her a present, she had seen the wrapped shape of it under the tree almost a week ago, and at this point in time, she wouldn't be able to get him anything. She hadn't even gone home since starting the case.
Esposito came in alone, seeing how Kate looked dead on her feet. "Here." He held his hand out.
"Huh?" Kate asked, looking confused. "What is it, Espo?" She sighed.
"Put the case file down. Castle gets home tonight, right?" He knew that his friend had taken Alexis and Martha on a ski trip and looked forward to the stories when they got back.
"Uh, I think so. What time is it?" She yawned.
"Three o'clock."
"Then I can't go yet."
"You can go. Let me handle Gates. I can give this a fresh perspective and all four of us can continue on the 26th, okay?"
"Are you sure? You just finished in court."
"I'm sure. Lanie can't leave yet anyway. Get some rest."
"Thanks, Javi."
"Merry Christmas, Kate."
"Merry Christmas." Kate stood up and left the room, heading for her car before realizing that she had come in with Lanie. She turned around and headed back upstairs, looking for Esposito. Esposito was already hard at work reading over the files. "Espo?" He looked up. "I need a lift please." He nodded, putting the file up, grabbing his keys. "Thanks."
"No problem."
Kate followed him to his car and gratefully slid in, tired and hungry.
"Home?" He asked.
"Yes, please." Esposito drove to Castle's apartment building. "Thanks, Espo. Wanna come in for a bit?"
"You should rest before Castle gets back." He knew there would be no resting until later that night after the rest of her family arrived. "And I want to get started on that case before Lanie gets done."
"Okay. Thanks." Kate got out and headed upstairs, opening the door tiredly.
The apartment was still empty, eerily quiet without Martha rehearshing, Alexis running in and out, and, of course, no Castle. Kate quietly put her things down and climbed onto the couch, closing her eyes.
As soon as Castle hit the city limits, he called the precinct to make sure Kate wasn't still working herself to death. Although he tried to hide it, he was worried about her, wished that he had stayed to take care of her, although he enjoyed spending time with Alexis and his mom.
Esposito answered the phone. "Hey, Castle."
"Hey, Espo. Is she still there?"
"I just took her home. She was almost dead on her feet. You need to get home and check on her."
"Yeah, we're just getting back to the city, going straight home. Thanks, man." Although he trusted Ryan with Kate, he knew that Esposito was the only other person who could reason with her when she got like this.
"All right. See you in a few days."
"Merry Christmas. Tell Lanie too for us."
"I will. Merry Christmas."
Castle stopped for takeout before heading home, letting Alexis carry the tiny bundle upstairs while he got the bags. Kate didn't hear anyone enter the apartment and continued to sleep, allowing Alexis to sigh in relief. She took the present upstairs quickly. Martha carried the food in, putting it away until Kate woke. She knew her son was worried about Kate and, to tell the truth, so were she and Alexis.
Kate yawned as she opened her eyes. Someone was moving around in the apartment and she grabbed her gun from the coffee table before realizing Martha was there. "Sorry."
"It's okay, sweetheart." Martha whispered. "Go back to sleep. I'll go upstairs." She tucked Kate in much as a mother would.
"No, I should help you."
"There's nothing to do. I've already put everything away down here and I'll go unpack my bag in my room."
"Are you sure? Where's Rick?"
"Getting the last of the bags from the car. He doesn't need help; Alexis already asked him."
"I don't believe that. But, okay, I'll stay here."
Martha disappeared to her room, hoping Kate would rest some more. Kate returned to the couch, but found that she couldn't sleep again. They were hiding something from her and she wanted to know what it was.
