The flight to Afghanistan was the longest one of Deeks' life, but he couldn't sleep. He rarely slept these days; he kept thinking that something was wrong, that Kensi needed him. He had defied Granger and he was assuming Hetty as well, if he'd asked her, to come halfway around the world, but he just couldn't sit idly by anymore. KC found her friend's hand and squeezed it, knowing how he felt since she also felt that way. Her fear was more evident than Deeks', but she had agreed to accompany him to save her best friend and bring her home.
"She'll be okay." He wasn't sure if he was trying to convince her or himself.
"I know. Kensi is stubborn," smiled KC.
They got off the plane with each other and Deeks looked at his phone again. He had used everything he'd learned as both a cop and working with Kensi to find her location. It was the simple matter of getting there and not blowing her cover once they did. He told himself all he wanted to do was see her, know she was alive, that he was just being overprotective once again. KC followed Deeks to a car and they drove off together, glad when they finally arrived at Kensi's location. KC partically bounded from the car, anxious to see Kensi. He found his breath taken away when he finally saw her, alone, her dark hair in a braid down her back. She looked all right, but he couldn't shake the feeling something was wrong. KC dropped her bag on a nearby chair and ran over, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"KENSI!" shouted KC happily.
Kensi looked over and for the first time in months their eyes connected. He waited to see what her reaction would be, but it was all he could do not to run to her. Kensi spotted her best friend and a smile broke out. She held her arms out and hugged KC tightly, while looking at the man she loved the whole time. She couldn't believe they were there, in front of her, in Afghanistan.
"I missed you!" KC told her, hugging her just as tightly. There were so many things that she had needed to tell her best friend.
"God, I've missed you guys sooo much." Kensi let her friend go to hug Deeks.
He kissed her, holding her close. "You okay?" He whispered.
"Now I am," she whispered back.
"I thought..." He shook his head and just held her, finding it near impossible to let her go again.
"Why are you guys here? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you are, but why?"
"We thought you might be in trouble. Especially after Granger came back alone," KC explained, taking part of the fall for Deeks.
"I was wondering where he was. I have to tell you guys something, but not now. Are you taking me home?" asked Kensi hopefully, but not in the least believing they were.
"Whenever you're ready, Kens. Regardless of what Hetty, Granger, or anyone else says." Deeks promised her.
"I want to go home so bad."
"Then get your stuff. We'll go." He was deadly serious. Nothing Hetty or Granger could do to him mattered. He just wanted her safely back at home with him.
"I can't. Not yet anyway. How are you guys?" she asked, changing the subject. "What have I missed?"
Deeks looked at KC. "How much time you got?" KC said, only half-joking.
"That much? Tell me everything."
Deeks looked around, unable to shake the feeling, even with her back in his arms. "Maybe we should wait. Do you have any time off coming?"
"I have to wait for Sabatino to come back. Why? What's wrong Deeks?"
"Just being overprotective again." He tried to smile for her, but he looked exhausted.
"Why don't you lie down Deeks? KC and I can catch up."
Deeks looked reluctant. "It's okay, Deeks. I'm here and we'll yell if anything comes up." He nodded, going inside, settling down in Kensi's cot. "He's scared something's going to happen," KC explained.
"Something like what?"
"To hurt you. That he'll lose you, not for a couple of months, but forever."
"I'm not going anywhere. But, he could be right about something happening KC. Hetty sent me to find a mole in the op, and I think I know who it is." Kensi had dropped her voice to a whisper.
"Sabatino, right?" She saw her friend's look. "Rose finally told Deeks. We're not the only ones worried."
"Something's off with him KC. I don't know what, but there's something."
She nodded seriously. "I believe you."
"I don't know what to do."
