Castle tried to fight off his attacker, getting beaten but finally overpowering the guy and then dropping to his knees, gasping for air.

Castle was having trouble catching his breath, but was still trying to reach Kate when he heard footsteps. Thinking more people were coming for them, he grabbed a nearby pipe and held it, ready to hit whoever came near them.
