Kate was curled up in her husband's arms, relaxing. It seemed odd for the apartment to be so quiet, to not be worrying about her caseload or her family, but at that particular moment, everything was perfect. She should have known chaos wouldn't stay away long. A knock on the door unsettled Castle. He kissed Kate and stood, opening the door with surprise.
"May I come in?" Jackson Hunt asked, carrying a present and flowers. He was dressed nicely and was actually looking apologetic about something.
Castle stared at his father until he got over his shock. "Sure." He stepped aside.
Kate sat up automatically, glad that they were dressed, something that hadn't happened that often in the last two weeks, with the honeymoon and now with Martha staying at Alexis's apartment. Castle moved back to Kate, hiding his happiness with wariness.
"These are for you," Jackson said, handing the flowers to Kate.
"Thank you," she said, a tint of blush on her cheeks. This was not what she'd expected from the last time she'd met Castle's father.
"And this is for both of you," Jackson handed the present to his son.
"Thanks. What can we do for you?" asked Castle quietly. He handed the present to Kate so he could make coffee for everyone.
"Is Martha here? Alexis?" Jackson asked politely.
"No. Alexis has her own place and Mom is staying with her for the week."
Kate put the flowers in the water and put the present on the counter, slipping her hand into Castle's.
"I just...I wanted to say I'm sorry I missed the wedding." Jackson said, seeming to mean it. "I would...I would have liked to see it."
"Where were you?" Castle asked from the kitchen with a hint of sadness in his voice.
The look on Jackson's face said he couldn't answer that question. There was another ring at the door. "Castle and I ordered Chinese. There's plenty of you're hungry," Kate offered, sensing that Jackson, in his way, was trying. Castle moved to the door and paid for the food, then returned to the kitchen.
"I don't want to intrude." He knew Castle wasn't about to let him walk out the door.
"Dad, stay. Spend some time here." Kate nodded, a slight smile on her face to encourage him, already getting out three plates. Jackson smiled as well and agreed to stay.
Happy, Castle dishes out the food and coffee for the three of them. They sat down together and ate, talking about anything that entered their minds. They talked into the night until Kate finally excused herself, wanting to give father and son some alone time. Castle kissed her goodnight and then continued his conversation.
It didn't take long for the real reason for Jackson's visit to surface after Kate left the room.
