She thought about this. "I like that, but I'm not a baby. I'm too old to be shut out or carried off and I'm old enough and smart enough and strong enough to help. Especially when Lina needs me. I was the one who found her, right?"

"You did. I'm glad you did. But you are still little when you think about it."
"You're wrong. Just because you can't make Kyle or Lina do what you want, I get treated like a baby."
"How old are you?"
"Thirteen."
"That's young."
She couldn't argue with that. "But not a baby."
"Not a baby. But you are my little girl, no matter what."
"Kyle was only three years older than me when you let him live by himself. And Lina was only four years older than me when she moved across the country to go to school."
"She was not with me then. And Kyle couldn't live with me cause of work and I will never let him be with his mother."
She sensed that tone coming into her father's voice and realized she was fighting a losing battle. He would never see her as anything but a baby and didn't even really understand what he'd done that was so terrible in her eyes.
"I need to talk to Ryan, but I'll be back."
She nodded in response. Horatio walked off.

Ryan paced helplessly, not knowing what else to do. He knew Kaya was upset but he couldn't give her what she needed most. Eric had disappeared to help Calleigh and Lina was behind hidden doors where only Alexx was being permitted to see her. He knew he should stop moving, but he couldn't.
"Mr Wolfe."
Ryan stopped pacing and looked at Horatio. "H." He answered not because Horatio was his boss, but because he was Natalia's husband, Lina and Kaya's dad, and they were his family.
"I'm sorry."
Ryan looked at Horatio like he hadn't heard him right. He tried to remember in all the years he'd known his boss another incident of him saying he was sorry to anyone and couldn't.
"I was rude and I shouldn't have been."
"You were upset about Lina."
"You were trying to help."
"For all the good it did."
"I was a jerk."
"I can't protect her, H. I can't."
"You can."
"I'm the reason she's here."
"No you aren't. That idiot is."
"I just...I wish I knew she'd be okay."
"She will..."
"How's Kaya?"
"Afraid."
"We all are."
"I know."
"How much longer?"
"Don't know."
"I know. It's just..." He paused. "How do you do it, H? How does Eric?"
"It's hard."
Ryan nodded.

Ryan took a deep breath and slowly let it out as the family came together when Alexx walked towards them.
"How is she?" Horatio asked.
"Dehydrated, weak, but she's awake, talking...She wants to see all of you."
"Okay. Kaya should go first."
Ryan nodded in agreement.
"Ryan, you go too."
"Yeah, Ryan. Come with me." Kaya put her hand in his before he could argue that Horatio and Natalia should go in first.
"Okay." Ryan followed the young girl.
Lina was half sitting up as they came in and smiled tiredly at them. "Hey."
Kaya almost jumped on the bed. "Are you okay?"
"Careful, sweetheart." Lina cautioned her. "I'll be all right," she answered, although she was pale under her tanned skin.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"Can I have a hug?"
She hugged her baby sister.
