"I do. You helped Jim, and he is so grateful."

"If it weren't for you, Ellie would have killed him."

"She did that cause she knew she was cornered. That was not our fault."

"No, Sara, she did that because she hates him, wants him dead. She killed Nanxy because she was cornered but..." She shook her head. "I used to think I was mad at Dad, and I was, with some good reasons, but she absolutely hates Jim...and is a great manipulator. I never saw it coming, but once I did, things started to make sense. If Ellie somehow is freed, it's Jim who needs to be scared, more than us, and I don't think he has a clue."

"Why should he? It's his little girl."

"He should because Ellie wasn't cornered, Sara. Ellie was trying to kill Jim. And I know no one gets it. I've been over and it and over it with Greg, but I'm just scared. He's my friend. He's like having another dad, not that I need a fourth one. I don't want him hurt."

"Neither do I. He's a dad for me too. A proper one. I'll protect him if I have to."
Morgan looked at her gratefully. "I know it's hard for you guys, that you've known her for years. I feel bad for Greg sometimes. Dad's managed to help Jim while still feeling like he's not letting me down, but Greg feels like he's torn, knowing Ellie for so long."
"I know that she's Jim's daughter, but I never liked her. I didn't like how she treated him after he was shot, or the fact that she doesn't actually care about him."
She nodded. "I wish I knew what the guys were doing. Russell called Greg on the way home, told him that he and Nick were both staying here, that he'd get some of the swing and day shifts to fill in. Something's wrong."
"You want to call?"
"Yeah. But not the guys. Finn." She paused. "I trust her to tell us the truth right now."
"Okay. Want me to do it? Or you?"
Morgan already had their friend on the line. "Hey. It's me."
"You okay? Sara?"
"Yeah, we're fine." She paused. "You would tell us, right, if something was going on?" She knew the answer. They had bonded over cases and cemented their sisterhood in a disastrous failed trip to Reno.
"Of course."
"Russell called Greg on the way home from the lab and said that the boys were to be bodyguards tonight, but they and Dad flew out of here."
"They're with me." She didn't want to worry them with the truth.
"Finn." She could hear it in her friend's voice, more obvious than if she'd used words. "What's going on?"
"Uh... I don't know if I should tell you guys."
Morgan was feeling more and more frustrated, but she knew getting upset wouldn't help. "You just said you would."
"Ellie escaped."
The phone slipped out of Morgan's hand.
"Morgan!!!"
Ellie was standing there in front of her, only this time she got to see the gun in her hand.
"Morgan, run!" shouted Sara. Ellie was holding her.
Morgan was frozen at first, but ran, not in the direction Sara had wanted her to, not away from Ellie, but towards them.
"Morgan, what are you doing?!"
"Let her go!" She could never leave another person in trouble, especially not Sara, and could never turn her back on Ellie without feeling the bullet entering her body all over again.
"Shut up," said Ellie.
"Ellie, you have nothing to gain with holding her. Let her go." She was well aware that her phone was still connected to Finn. She felt it was the only shot they had at the moment.
"No. She dies tonight too."
"Sara didn't do anything to you."
"Yes she did."
"What do you want, Ellie? If you just wanted us dead, you'd have shot us already."
"You have to suffer, like my mum did,"
"We didn't have anything to do with Nancy's death."
"It's your faults. If you hadn't caught me, she wouldn't be dead."
Morgan didn't have an answer for that, so she looked for an opening. Anywhere she could see to get Sara away from Ellie, even if it meant putting herself there.
"Don't move!"
"I'm not."
"You want to."
"Of course I want to."
"You can't save her."
"There are people out there who still care about you, Ellie."
"Like who? My dad? He loves you more than me."
"Your dad. Nick and Greg. Sara. I wanted to be your friend until you shot me."
"You don't now? Whatever. I don't need friends."
"If you hurt Sara, that all goes away. If you hurt someone else, they'll kill you Ellie. Is that what you want?"
"It's better than this miserable life I lead."
"Your life is your fault. Not your dad's. Not ours. Yours."
"Shut the hell up or I'll shoot both of you."
"You don't need Sara here, Ellie. You want to hurt your dad? You said it yourself he likes me. Let Sara go, okay?"
"No. He likes her too. I can make him hurt worse with both of you here."
All Morgan could think of was to make Ellie keep talking, distract her, until she could find an opening, until the others could arrive. What would happen after was anyone's guess.

Morgan talked a good game about the shooting being over, about her being fine, both physically and mentally, but she knew she wouldn't be able to turn her back on Ellie. Not again. "That's what she wants. She wants to do more damage and she'd just love it if Jim came with the rest, wouldn't you, Ellie? And he would."

Sara's eyes betrayed her next words. "Please don't worry about me. I'm fine, it's not the first time I've been a hostage with a murderer."
