"So, I'll see you tonight then baby," said Castle before hanging up.
He finished packing his suitcase and headed out to a waiting taxi that was going to take him to the airport so he could head back to New York, and his lovely fiancée. He had no idea what he was going to find when he landed.

Castle stepped out of the airport and caught a taxi to the precinct, having gotten Kate's message five minutes earlier. She had sounded upset, scared even, and he wanted to make sure she was okay.
"Hey guys," he said when he finally entered the precinct. "Where's Kate?"

Javi rushed him into a private meeting place while Ryan stood watch for the IAB guys who were not buying that Castle had been out of town and wouldn't know where Kate was. In fact, the boys themselves had been hoping that she'd at least gotten in touch with Castle. "I don't know, man. Your mom, Alexis, her dad, Lanie, no one knows. We were...we were really hoping you would. IAB's been breathing down everyone's neck, even Gates'. We finally told her the truth about what's been going on, by the way. We had to. Have you seen the news?"

"She's on the news everywhere. They're saying she killed Vulcan Simmons. I haven't seen her since, but I know her, Castle. She hurts about her mom, but she wouldn't kill anyone unless she or someone she loved was in danger and there was no way out. I mean, she had Bracken in her sights before and didn't kill him."

Esposito nodded. "Just take care of her for us." He thought of Kate like a sister and knew Ryan did as well. Even Gates seemed genuinely upset for Kate.

Kate was wearing one of his old beatup hoodies that he'd left at her place, way too big on her, but it covered her completely.
"Thank god! Are you okay?" asked Castle in a whisper.
"Rick," she whispered, holding him.
"It's gonna be okay, I promise."
"Will you tell your mom and Alexis...tell them I love them. Tell them I'm sorry. My dad too."
"Sorry for what? You didn't do anything."
"I'm leaving. I can't stay here, get you or them killed."
"You won't get us killed."
"Not if I leave."
"You aren't going anywhere, especially not without me."
"Do I have to give you the list of the people he's killed? Not just Mom, but military, cops, even Montgomery. I have to protect my family."
"You can't leave us Kate. We love you, and we'll protect you."
"You can't protect me, Rick. No one can. Even Montgomery...And I refuse to lose someone else I love. I refuse to let Martha lose her son, Alexis lose her father."
"And what about your father? How do you think he feels right now? His only child, his beloved daughter, is a fugitive. Don't you think he wants to protect you too?"
"Rick..." Tears were streaming down her face but she knew that she was doing the right thing for the people she loved.
"Don't..."
"I have to." She had known for two years that this was the way it would end. "Please don't hate me. Please. I tried. I really tried to let it go."
"I don't hate you. I love you, and that's why I can't let you go."
"I know." She kissed him softly and turned and walked away.
"Wait..." He sadly watched her leave, hoping to find her again.

Alexis met her dad outside the apartment, her eyes almost the same color as her hair. She hugged him, not sure what to say. She knew Gram and Jim were both upset, but she just didn't know what to do for anyone.

Castle tightened his grip on his daughter's hand as they walked into his apartment. He was scared beyond anything he had ever felt before.

Martha and Jim were sitting side by side on the couch, a far cry from their first meeting as prospective in-laws. Although Martha's hand was placed reassuringly on Jim's upper arm, it was impossible to tell which one was Kate's actual parent if it wasn't already known. Lanie was whispering softly with the boys while keeping an eye on the parents.

Lanie's heart broke when she saw Castle come in with just Alexis with him. "I don't know. I was really hoping she'd come home."
