Lina picked Kaya up at school just as they were shutting down for the storm. She headed to the lab, knowing that it would be safer than her house near the beach.
"Where are mum and dad?" Kaya asked.
"Dad's trying to get everyone into the lab before the storm hits. It'll be okay, K." She offered a half-smile.
"Where's mum?"
"She's probably already there."
"And what about Mari? Is she going there too?"
"I'm not sure if she was with the sitter today or with her Bala."
"Is she safe?"
"Of course she is, sweet girl. Eric was already at the lab. He would never be there if she wasn't safe, right?"
"Right." But something felt wrong to the little girl.
Lina looked at the phone and back at the road. She'd tried to get several calls through to Ryan after her dad had started rounding people up and it scared her that he wasn't answering.
"Lina, are you and Ryan still going out this weekend?"
"Yeah, but we'll be home by Sunday. Your mom said we could have our Friday sleepover on Sunday as long as I got you to school on time."
"Really???"
"Really." She smiled.
"Yay!"
Lina smiled again as they pulled up the parking lot. "There's a coat in the back, sweetheart. Put it on and put the hood on, then run, okay?"
"Are you coming?"
"Right behind you." It just wasn't going to be as easy for her to run on the wet ground in her heeled boots as it was for Kaya in tennis shoes.
"Okay." Kaya covered herself with the coat and grabbed her school bag, the pushed the door open and ran as fast as she could to the front doors of the lab, looking back for her sister only once she was safely inside the building.
Lina finally decided to take her boots off and carry them as she ran across the ground in her bare feet, getting soaked in the process, but getting inside safely, her cell phone in her pocket.
"Can we find daddy?"
Lina nodded, shivering, pushing some wet hair out of her face, hair made even darker from the rain.
"Good." She made her way through the crowds until she found Eric.
Eric hugged her, moving the hood so he could see Kaya's face. "Mari's in your dad's office."
"Where's dad?"
"Around here somewhere. I lost track of him," he stopped briefly to talk to one of the lab techs and turned his attention back to the girls in front of him. "I'll send him to the office when I find him, okay?"
"Okay."
Eric waited until Kaya went to Horatio's office. "He can't find anyone. Not the girls...Or Ryan and Walter."
"I can't get through to Ryan either. Aren't the girls together?"
He nodded. "But I can't get Calleigh to pick up the phone. I've been trying since I picked up Mari, to let her know she was safe."
"I'm worried Eric. The girls both have children to look after. The guys are my friends."
"Your dad's going crazy. He thinks of us all as family, but Natalia..." He paused. "That's why I didn't tell Kaya...He's in the break room."
"I need to talk to him."
"I know. Go ahead. I'll run interference and I'll let you know if I hear from anyone."
"Where are mum and dad?" Kaya asked.
